The six best affordable family SUVs

The Karoq could be beaten in one area or another by some of these rivals – but none of them can pack such an impressive array of talent into a reasonably sized family SUV.

The interior feels a lot more plush than you’d expect for the Karoq’s price, and the SE L version, which you can afford on our budget, is toy-packed – not to mention the clever Varioflex rear seats. These slide, fold, tip forward and can even be removed entirely to leave a van-like cargo area ideal for hauling large, bulky items.

The 1.5-litre petrol engine offers plenty of ride and very reasonable fuel economy, and while the Karoq isn’t quite as exciting as some of the best cars here, it’s still very enjoyable to drive, with crisp, easy handling and a comfortable ride .

A perfect all-rounder. And then there’s the price; When you factor in everything you’re getting, the Karoq looks like excellent value. No wonder it’s our favorite family SUV right now.

Our preferred variant: Karoq 1.5 TSI ACT 150 SE L

Vitals: 148hp, 42.8mpg, £27,615

Buy because: It’s one of the most practical SUVs on the market and a brilliant all-rounder – and that makes it a bargain at this price point compared to its rivals.
