Cleveland Browns fans have witnessed a shocking play by Jacoby Brissett in three games so far. The term “shocking” is used here with a positive connotation as realistically the Browns should be 3-0 had it not been for a total defensive collapse in Week 2 against the New York Jets.
The team is 2-1 below Brissett and the veteran quarterback is exceeding expectations. Most recently, he went 21/31 for 220 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday night’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So what happens if the team with him in the middle keeps winning when Deshaun Watson comes back in week 13? Could the $230M man be on the bench while his team battles for a playoff spot?
Deshaun Watson will skip Jacoby Brissett as soon as he can
The answer is no. Deshaun Watson will get his job back once he’s eligible in Week 13 against the Houston Texans.
This applies regardless of whether the team is 2-9 or 10-1. He was hired as a franchise quarterback, and everyone who owns has defended his character amid serious legal allegations.
There are legitimate concerns about Jacoby Brissett’s team thriving with Watson’s return. This is a player surrounded by controversy, which could be a problem with some of his teammates.
He also hasn’t played regularly since the 2020 season, which could mean he’s rusty and playing at a higher risk of injury.
However, the plan was always Deshaun Watson and there was no revolt within the team when he played in the preseason. The only difference in Week 13 could come if he doesn’t play evenly and the team immediately loses a game or two with him.
On paper, Watson remains a top quarterback in the NFL. He can run and pass effectively and also owns the most lucrative deal in league history. If he’s healthy and eligible, he’s expected to play, and at an elite level.
So where is Brissett? Well he showed up, knew the circumstances and is a veteran who has often spent time in a backup role. Going to the bench in Week 13 won’t surprise him regardless of the record.
If anything, being on the bench while playing well can be a blessing in disguise to boost his value this offseason.
It’s fun speculating on hypotheses and what might happen to the Browns and Watson. But it’s important to remember the reality and what will actually happen later this season.
For now, fans are hoping that Jacoby Brissett’s great game continues. If not, Deshaun Watson can come back and save the day. And if he does, Watson will return fresh and ready to earn a postseason spot. It’s a win-win for the Browns on all fronts.
