Depending on how you look at it, there could be either no OnePlus 11 or no OnePlus 11 Pro, at least according to a prominent leaker.
Max Jambor – who isn’t one of the most prolific tipsters but has a reasonable track record – has held his own Twitter (opens in new tab) that the next OnePlus flagship will be called the OnePlus 11 and that we won’t see a OnePlus 11 Pro alongside it.
However, if you were hoping for pro-level specs then, according to Jambor at least, there’s no need to worry as it looks like the OnePlus 11 will be the OnePlus 11 Pro in everything but the name.
If this rumor is true then there won’t be a phone called the OnePlus 11 Pro, but neither will there be a phone with the specs we’d expect from a standard OnePlus 11.
in one follow up tweet (opens in new tab)Jambor claimed that the OnePlus 11 will land in Q1 2023 (so sometime between January and March next year) and suggested they don’t know what’s planned beyond that, so it’s not impossible that a standard OnePlus 11 will land later – but if it does, it apparently needs a new name.
Analysis: a confusing naming strategy, but that’s the current one
If OnePlus ditches the Pro name in 2023, it risks confusing potential buyers who might assume the OnePlus 11 is a “standard” flagship rather than a high-end flagship (much like the iPhone 14 and Google Pixel 7, which sits below their respective Pro-branded siblings). But it’s also a sensible change, considering that this year OnePlus launched a OnePlus 10 Pro instead, without a standard OnePlus 10 alongside it.
That in itself is confusing as one can assume the 10 Pro is the Pro version of the OnePlus 10 – a phone that doesn’t exist.
This issue stems from the fact that OnePlus used to launch both Standard and Pro models and the names made sense at the time, but with the move to just one flagship model in the first half of the year, things got mixed up .
So this name change, if it comes to that, fixes one confusion while creating a new one. Whatever the name of this upcoming handset, it’ll be worth paying attention to because based on the form it’s held so far, there’s a high chance it could find a spot among the best phones out there.
