There would be no better legacy of this Covid crisis than a fitter, healthier Britain

Now that we have the reopening plan, we have to focus on offering as much sport as possible for children. With this in mind, the Minister of Education and I are bringing together experts from the world of sport, education and business over the coming days to work with them to keep children fit and fully active in both school and school over the next few months to do during the holidays.

We’ll start with the basics. What are the critical foundation blocks that children may have missed, and how can we help them catch up? Just as we cannot let children fall behind in numeracy and literacy, we cannot afford to neglect their “physical education.” Learning to jump, throw and catch is just as much a part of everyday school life as double arithmetic.

Although there will be many challenges, I believe we also have a real opportunity. In the last year there has been a noticeable change across the country in how we think about our physical and mental health. Many of us are now deeply attached to our daily walk or run, and lockdown has highlighted just how vital and cathartic exercise can be amid the stress and bustle of our daily lives.

But I want to go further. Just as major global sporting events of the past have produced a new generation of budding young athletes and sports enthusiasts, wouldn’t it be great if Covid could be a catalyst for a new era of sport and activity? What better legacy could we ever create out of a global health crisis than a fitter, healthier Britain?

That’s why I’ve decided to move children as much as possible in the next few months. We plan to update our Government sport strategy in the coming months to put physical activity at the core of our recovery and as we start to end lockdown I want to see children across the UK bouncing back from the pandemic. Schools start on March 8th – and luckily it won’t be long now. There would be no better legacy of this Covid crisis than a fitter, healthier Britain
