Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes Australia have what it takes to win the 2022 T20 World Cup on home soil. He has been impressed with the way the Aussies play in ICC tournaments and has no doubt that they will likely go into the race as favourites.
Australia haven’t had a great run against England lately as they haven’t even managed to win a single game. However, the defending champion can expect an increase in performance with his team.
Skipper Aaron Finch’s 100% win record at the Toss was also helpful for the Aussies in last year’s UAE conditions. Here’s what Aakash Chopra had to say in a video on his YouTube channel while previewing the Australia squad:
“Australia has always played T20 cricket in a different way. They don’t play their full strength often because they probably give more importance to The Ashes. But when they came together at the World Cup last year, they won it. Finch did it. He didn’t hit enough runs, but he did win the all-important toss. Toss is the boss. You now have the ‘Favorites’ tag.”
Aakash Chopra on Australia’s ‘Group of Death’
Aaksh Chopra expects Group A of the Super 12 stage to be tough as teams like Australia, England and New Zealand are all capable of beating each other on any given day. Afghanistan can also throw up surprises here and there.
“You have last year’s finalists in Australia and New Zealand and also the overwhelming favorites in this format in England. Afghanistan may not be as competitive under these conditions. But you can still call it a ‘group of death’.”
Aakash Chopra also predicted that veteran opener David Warner will be Australia’s top run scorer. Warner won the Player of the Tournament last year and is keen to do well at the home T20 World Championship. Chopra added:
“David Warner will be Australia’s top run scorer. He’s a runaway legend in the T20 format. He’s already shown he’s in great shape and will also know his ability to compete in World Cups indefinitely could be very make sure it counts.”
