Throwback to Cody Jinks Performing “Cast No Stones” On The Texas Music Scene

Old but good.

Cody Jinks is a phenomenal songwriter, but we all know that. A song I’ve always loved is “Cast No Stones”.

The tune has a slower melody, still with deep red dirt guitar riffs and the kind of lyrics that stick to your ribs.

In 2015, Jinks did an appearance for The Texas Music Scene, and this live version of the song has to be one of my favorites.

The video begins with Cody Jinks providing a backstory on how the song came to life and it’s interesting to hear how it’s been around for a while but only made its record debut in 2015 Adobe Sessions.

“It’s a song I wrote about seven or eight years ago. I would put it on a plate that is no longer printed.

We played it all the time and a lot of people said we had to re-edit it like we are doing now.”

I would have loved to hear how they originally played the song. It’s always fascinating to hear an artist tweak a tune slightly over time to suit their sound as it evolves and they have perfected their craft.

“It’s turned out a little more bluesy than the original, but we cut it down and it’s the same table of contents… you know, lyrically it’s still the same.

It’s a waltz and it’s one of the slower songs we play but man they shine (the fans) everywhere we go. They love this song.”

After Jinks gives an intro, the band joins in the melody. Jinks’ deep and smooth voice hits all the right spots to match the guitar. You can hear the blues elements in how the band plays which is phenomenal.

He belts out the lyrics to the second chorus of:

“I don’t throw stonesWhat gives you the right? To tell me my businessGood god, man, you’re crazy

So put your Bible onOh let me get mineI’m not dragging the whole world to hellYou’re wasting my time.”

This song will always be a classic Jinks song for me. It hits the nail on the head of who he is as an artist, with deep Southern draws, classic Red Dirt Texas sound and outstanding songwriting.
