Tomo-chan is a girl! Season 1 Episode 2 Summary
The first half of the episode starts with June inviting Tomo to sit next to him on the bus. While she initially agrees, she soon becomes too embarrassed and stands up instead. Suddenly, a man begins groping her, causing Tomo to go through a range of emotions including denial, confusion, and anger as she tries to understand what is happening to her. Tomo doesn’t want Jun to see what’s happening and tries to pretend nothing is happening. Her apparent discomfort still catches Jun’s attention and he immediately attacks the man who is attacking her.
For a moment, Tomo is in high spirits as she remembers how Jun handled the situation for her. However, she is brought back to reality when Jun suggests that she stop wearing skirts to school. When she tells the story Misuzu, her friend is simultaneously concerned and outraged for her. However, when Tomo reveals that Jun finds her skirts distracting, Misuzu wonders if maybe he just doesn’t want her to be attacked again. Tomo mistakes this for Jun taking care of her, but Misuzu continues, pointing out that Tomo’s skirt is shorter than normal, despite the shorts she wears underneath.
After being slapped by Tomo for his earlier comments, Jun is thrilled to find out she is no longer mad and ready to go home with him. However, he is shocked upon seeing her as she is not wearing her usual shorts under her skirt at Misuzu’s suggestion. He’s almost too confused to look at her, and when they get to the bus, he tells himself that any other man is a potential threat to Tomo.
Once off the bus, Jun refuses to look at Tomo and decides to go ahead of her. It eventually angers her enough that she grabs his arm, but the action causes her skirt to explode. Jun gets so nervous he passes out. When he comes to, he apologizes for how he acted before, but Tomo is too distracted by his face to hear him. Despite this, the two later reconcile in the hall after some influence from Misuzu.
The second half of the episode starts with a busty girl named Carol walking down the school hallway while various boys call out to her and ask if they can do her a favor. Tomo watches the men flock to her and wonders how she got to be as girly as she is. Misuzu explains that she not only stands out because of her looks, but also because of her personality. Tomo mistakes this for Carol’s defenselessness and confuses her.
Tomo is surprised to meet Carol and misaki ttogether in the hall. She asks how they know each other and Carol tells her they are in an arranged marriage. After finding out that Tomo is not only female but is friends with Misaki, she seems determined to have an argument with Tomo, calling her “Dumbbell” whenever she sees her.
Carol approaches Misuzu and searches for dirt on Tomo in exchange for cake, but when she asks how to take out Tomo, Misuzu directs her to Jun instead. Since he has nothing better to do after school, he agrees to help her . However, after assessing her strength, he concludes that she is too weak to engage in combat. Carol hopes Jun can make her strong enough to fight someone.
When Jun picks up Carol after class to train her, Tomo is both surprised and nervous. Misuzu keeps stirring the pot, telling her that she has never been so kind to another girl before. Even at the club, Tomo is preoccupied with thoughts of Jun and Carol. Meanwhile, Jun slowly realizes that Carol has no stamina and no athletic ability.
Tomo shows up at the gym to see what they’re up to, only to find that Jun is training Carol. Carol reveals that the person she wants to fight is Tomo, while Tomo starts swearing at Jun. Carol watches Jun and Tomo interact and realizes that Tomo poses no threat to her relationship with Misaki and leaves. She still goes to the cake with Misuzu as she promised, but when Carol asks if it makes them friends, Misuzu suggests asking Tomo instead. Carol is afraid she’s already screwed up her chance, but is sure Tomo will still agree.
Carol is happy to make Tomo and Misuzu friends after asking. The episode ends with Tomo Jun telling Carol it’s not that bad. When Jun says that Carol and Misuzu are all the rage among boys right now, he accidentally reveals that he and Misuzu dated for a brief time in middle school, which shocks Tomo.
After this episode, I still stand by my initial belief that this show and romance is going somewhere. Sometimes they make a joke or comment that seems a little out of the ordinary, only to close with a much deeper plot and outcome than you expected. I was pleasantly surprised to see how they addressed Tomo’s feelings early in the episode as they felt more realistic than I expected. It’s nice to see that not everything is always a joke.
Carol’s recklessness and schtick where she pops up in random places turned out to be funnier than I expected. At first I thought it would annoy me, but like most characters, I grew to love her after realizing that she is just the way she is. At the end of the episode, her character is given a little more backstory to help you understand. It makes it a lot more rewarding to watch her and Tomo become friends, especially in a series where Tomo could easily be portrayed as a jealous or mean character due to her looks.
