BAYTOWN, Texas (KPEL News) — There are multiple reports of a tornado making landfall in Baytown, Texas as a powerful storm cell pushed across state lines into Louisiana.
That cell, which led to several school districts announcing early closures Tuesday over concerns for the safety of students and faculty, has so far produced large gusts and at least one tornado.
Deer Park, Texas reportedly suffered the worst storm damage. It looks like the tornado started there, entered Baytown, and then lifted off. Multiple images and videos on social media show heavy rain and damage across the region.
“Extreme Meteorologist” Reed Timmer has been following the storm across Texas and has posted live updates on his Facebook page, including this 5-minute video of the damage in Southeast Texas.

Damaging winds and some tornadoes remain a possibility today along the upper Texas coast and will extend eastward across coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle tonight.
The trail of storms will sweep through Acadiana, and the strongest storms are yet to come.
A concentrated area of tornado potential currently exists near the Houston area near the warm front and surface low. Extreme pressure drops ahead of a storm line with 2-hour falls of 8 mb were noted over the area. Shear remains quite strong with an effective SRH of over 500 m2/s2. Additionally, surface/boundary layer winds are intense, which will increase relative storm inflow. Therefore, the risk of a tornado and damaging winds may increase over the next few hours. A strong tornado is possible depending on the storm mode and access to the warm side of the warm front.
