Tottenham are on the verge of finding a new sporting director, with Tim Steidten and Tiago Pinto of interest
Ottenham are apparently on the verge of appointing a new sporting director.
Former Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Tim Steidten is a candidate for the vacant position alongside Brentford’s Lee Dykes and Roma’s Tiago Pinto.
Steidten is unemployed after leaving the Bundesliga side in March, although chief executive Daniel Levy is yet to hold face-to-face meetings with the 44-year-old.
Steidten, a former player in German lower leagues, joined Leverkusen from Werder Bremen in 2019, initially as chief scout reporting to sporting director Simon Rolfes.
He was promoted to sporting director in July last year and has reportedly been responsible for bringing a number of exciting young talents to the club, including Edmond Tapsoba, Jeremie Frimpong and Piero Hincapie – a centre-back admired by Spurs.
Dyes and Pinto complete the list of favourites. Johannes Spors, who is being linked to the job, is not a candidate.
Levy is on the hunt for a new sporting director after chief executive Fabio Paratici resigned last month after the Italian lost an appeal against his global football ban. The club’s new sporting director will report to new chief football officer Scott Munn, effectively Levy’s new No. 2, who is due to start work in July after his gardening stint at City Football Group comes to an end.
Steidten was Leverkusen’s sporting director when the Bundesliga side appointed Xabi Alonso as coach and his appointment sparked speculation Spurs could sign the 41-year-old Spaniard as their new head coach.
Alonso is of interest for Spurs, despite concerns over his lack of experience, and he is currently classified as an outsider for Antonio Conte’s permanent successor.
Steidten also knows Julian Nagelsmann, although Spurs pulled him out last week and have no intention of interviewing the 35-year-old. Nagelsmann is said to have been open to the job but had concerns there was no sporting director.
Meanwhile, Spurs meet relegated Leicester City in Bangkok this summer as part of their Asia-Pacific pre-season tour.
Spurs take on Foxes in the Thai capital on Sunday, July 23. They have already announced friendlies against West Ham in Perth on July 18 and Roma in Singapore on July 26.
