Former Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) striker Martin Cardetti said in 2020 Ronaldinho was a better player than Lionel Messi in his prime. The Argentine claimed Ronaldinho was ‘touched by God’.
Messi, 35, is often regarded as the greatest player of all time, scoring 702 goals and providing 333 assists in 854 club games. His most recent triumph at the 2022 FIFA World Cup cemented his legacy.
However, Cardetti would prefer Barcelona icon Ronaldinho to the Argentine if he were to choose between the two. The Real Cartagena boss spoke enthusiastically about his time playing alongside former Brazil international Ronaldinho for PSG. He told El Crack Deportivo in 2020:
“As a coach for my team, I would prefer Ronaldinho at his best over Messi.”
He continued by implying that the legendary attacker is a different player than Messi:
“I shared a year with Ronaldinho and he is a different player; He is touched by God. He was always having fun; He’s always done things with the ball and he’s practiced a lot to replicate those things in games.
Ronaldinho has had a phenomenal career, playing for Barcelona, PSG and AC Milan. In 542 club games he scored 197 goals and provided 163 assists. Known for his tricks and grace on the ball, the Brazilian popularized the “ginga” style of football around the world.
The Barcelona legend won the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the 2006 UEFA Champions League and two La Liga titles (2005 and 2006) among others. He was also the winner of the 2005 Ballon d’Or.
Ronaldinho and Messi played together at Barcelona and were part of a dominant side that clinched the league and Champions League in the 2005/06 season. Messi spoke about Ronaldinho as his mentor in an interview with TyC Sports in 2019:
“He mentored me and made me feel comfortable and I loosened up. After that I was always looking for him on the pitch. But we didn’t have many years that we could enjoy together. Besides, we got to this one I haven’t played that much for a while. I would have liked to have played more with Ronaldinho.”
PSG want to keep Lionel Messi until 2024 to prevent him from returning to Barcelona
Lionel Messi left Barcelona on a free transfer in 2021 after financial complications meant they were unable to renew the Argentine’s contract. He departed in emotional circumstances after spending 16 seasons at the Camp Nou.
The Argentine’s arrival at PSG was celebrated by fans as he joined an exciting attack alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. He has been in superb form this season, scoring 13 goals and providing 14 assists in 20 games in all competitions.
The Parisians want to tie Messi to a new deal as his current contract expires at the end of the season. The Ligue 1 giants want the Argentine to end his career at Parc des Princes and not return to Barcelona, according to Marca.
Messi has been a tremendous asset to the club from both a performance and a commercial perspective.
PSG are keen to manage his potential exit in the best possible way in order to boost the club’s image. They believe a return to Barcelona would be detrimental to the seven-time Ballon d’Or and want to prevent that from happening.
