Yazmin Oukhellou has recalled how she “snapped” her own arm to free herself after a 70ft car crash that killed boyfriend Jake McLean.
The 28-year-old The Only Way Is Essex star had spontaneously flown to Turkey to reconcile with his on-off boyfriend McLean and “everything was perfect” before the accident happened.
She told the Sun: “We just stumbled for ages. It felt like walking around in a washing machine, just round and round.
“Then it finally stopped and my right arm was trapped.
“The car was upside down. It had an open sunroof and my right arm just tucked behind my back and under the folded-back car roof.
“I tried to honk my foot but it didn’t work.”
The reality star revealed that she severed an artery in her arm during the accident.
She said: “I could just feel my arm which was completely covered in blood. It was like lying in a hot bath, there was so much around me.
“At the same time I tried to wake Jake up. I didn’t want to admit to myself that he might be dead.
“So I was like, ‘Okay, I can either lie still and bleed to death or break my own arm to try and save us, I didn’t have a choice.
“So I kind of broke my arm through pure adrenaline and panic. I got out of the car and clasped my arm with my left hand.
“I ran to the top of the embankment, I yelled for help and then all of a sudden I saw a flashlight.”
Oukhellou said there was a man walking his dog who ran to her, took off his shirt and wrapped it around her arm.
“I climbed back down and tried to take his pulse but I couldn’t feel anything and then the ambulance came.
“You helped me. I said, ‘Please, can you just help him’ and they said, ‘We just have to take him to another hospital’.
“I think they knew it, but to me, even now, I still feel like it’s not real. I still feel like I’m just waiting to wake up from a nightmare and it’s just something that never happens,” she said.
Oukhellou said she spent the night with friends at a club in the tourist resort of Bodrum before the couple decided to head to a friend’s villa “high up in the mountains”.
She added: “I nodded off in the car. I slept and woke up when the car drove off the cliff.
“Now I know that if I hadn’t slept I probably wouldn’t have survived because the doctor said it meant my body was more relaxed.
“I cut an artery and a nerve, that’s why I bled so much. The doctors called me an angel, a miracle because it’s a notorious place and people never survived.
“Now I’m just wondering how the hell did my partner die while I survived? It made me see life very differently.
“I’m definitely going to need therapy for a while, and I’m going to try inpatient treatment as well. I know this will stay with me forever, I have to take it slow.”
