Tragedy: “Joyful” teenager stabbed to death by 6 others in New York

The senseless wave of violence sweeping New York City has washed away another life.
Nyheem Wright, 17, of Brooklyn, died Saturday from wounds he received when he was attacked after school on Friday.
According to police, six teenagers were chasing Wright on Coney Island New York Post.
He made it to a Rite Aid parking lot – about a mile from the school – before being overpowered in what police believe was a gang-related attack.
Wright was a senior at K728 Liberation Diploma Plus High School, New York City Councilman Ari Kagan Facebook.

When he was beaten, a suspect reportedly stabbed Wright in the back WABC TV.
Wright reached a nearby store and called 911. He was taken to Maimonides Medical Center but died there the next day.
Kagan kept posting Facebook that Wright suffered a collapsed lung and a punctured vein.

New York Schools Chancellor David Banks released a series of tweets about Wright’s death.
“This week our students have suffered repeated acts of senseless violence and tonight we mourn a most tragic loss of life,” he wrote.

“I spoke to the young man’s headmaster this evening who described him as a cheerful leader. Nearing graduation, he was a hard worker who took an active role in guiding other young people at his school. Our city suffers from these losses,” he wrote.

The 60th Ward, which covers Coney Island, is dealing with skyrocketing crime rates, according to the New York Daily News.
As of Jan. 15, police have investigated 26 crimes, a 160 percent increase from early 2022.
Burglaries and grand thefts have also increased since early 2023.
