Transgender Volleyball Player Spikes Ball in Face of Girl Opponent, Causes Severe Head and Neck Injuries

A North Carolina school district is barring further single-player volleyball competitions after a player sustained an injury in a game against a team featuring a transgender athlete last month.

According to WLOS-TV, the Cherokee County School District intends for its teams to forego all further scheduled volleyball games against the Highlands School.

Cherokee County School Board member Arnold Mathews stated that the school board decided against further games against Highlands after a Hiwassee Dam High School player was injured after being hit by a spike volleyball, according to WLOS.

Grainy footage showed the moment the student and athlete was injured.

Coaches believe the player who hit the damaging ball was a natural male who played on a women’s team as a transgender athlete, according to The Post Millennial, citing North Carolina’s Education First Alliance.

According to WPDE-TV, the goal was unlike anything a women’s volleyball coach had seen in his career.

“At that meeting in particular, a 40-year-old coach said he’d never seen a hit like this,” Cherokee board member Joe Wood said of the volleyball injury.

“That was really what sealed the decision, at least on my part.”

Should men be banned from women’s sport?

The school board voted 5-1 to abandon further contests against Highlands, according to the WPDE.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association confirmed that the district has the authority to abandon the competitions when approached by WLOS for comment.

The girl, who was hit in the face, is severely injured by the spike.

Trainers say she “suffered serious head and neck injuries resulting in long-term concussion symptoms,” according to Education First Alliance.

Cherokee board members cite competition concerns as well as safety concerns in their decision not to play Highlands.

“The issue of competitive advantage has to be inherent in any scenario involving this type of transgender conversion,” Vice Chairman Jeff Martin said of the board’s decision, according to The Blaze.

Male competitions in female sports leagues have previously resulted in injuries among female athletes.

World Rugby banned transgender athletes from competing in competitions in 2020, citing the clear and current risk of injury for female players, according to The Guardian. Transgender Volleyball Player Spikes Ball in Face of Girl Opponent, Causes Severe Head and Neck Injuries
