Tyler Childers’ 2018 LR Baggs sessions still went differently

I’ve loved Tyler Childers since I first heard him.

In fact, like many people, I see him as the reason my entire taste in music has changed and at least in part the reason I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to write great music for a living.

I too, like many people, was a little confused at first about his latest release, Can I take my dogs to heaven? Not that it was bad (it certainly wasn’t), and I’ll never blame an artist for taking a sonic risk with new music, dammit, that’s part of being an artist, but when you’re in songs about cocaine and murder in love, it only takes a second to get used to this new version of Childers.

That’s why sometimes I like to travel back to the old days. Before he cuts his hair. When he wasn’t the poster boy for “country music not on the radio.”

Back to the absolutely classic performance of “Feathered Indians,” “Whitehouse Road,” and “Bus Route,” recorded by LR Baggs during the 2017 Americana Festival, a year before his legendary acceptance speech, in which the host mispronounced his name and he became angry at the term “Americana” and the value of true country music.

This is also worth listening to…

Yes, he is the absolute man.

Made famous by nothing more than great writing, cutting vocals, raw production and a true heart for the craft, Childers will forever hold a special place in the hearts of country fans around the world, but especially the lucky few who own him grabbed his rocktails and rode the wave that’s still sweeping through the mainstream, putting country music in a better place than it has in quite a while.

So grab a drink, put your feet up and let these performances from the LR Baggs Sessions take you back to the moment it all started.

Tyler, you have a forever fan here.

Keep doing your thing and thank you for all the variety of music you have released and will continue to release for the rest of your career.

Cheers everyone.
