Ultra-cheap night routes in the Northeast Corridor

Night owls (or early risers) now pay less to ride Amtrak.

The company announced Thursday a price list of $5 to $20 for routes operating between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m. on select Northeast routes.

The cheaper routes are served in their stations Northeast Corridor such as New York, Washington DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and more. For example, an overnight train from New York to Newark, New Jersey costs just $5.

The discounts are aimed at “travellers returning from concerts, plays, sporting events, or who prefer to depart later or earlier,” the company wrote in a Announcement Thursday.

The new late-night pricing tier could relieve some of the cost pressure on travelers who are still spending even when inflation is squeezing their wallets. Flight bookings, for example, remained strong as consumers placed a high value on travel after the pandemic hiatus.

Amtrak’s Northeast route, in particular, has become more expensive over the past year, sometimes even surpassing airline tickets, as the corridor is popular with commuters and connects major cities across the region.
