Considering they went 12-21 last season, Mizzou has a lot to be proud of. The Aggies meanwhile reached the finals of the Mountain West Tournament and fell to San Diego State.

Aggies could be Dark Horse
Utah State truly had an impressive season and was by far the second best program in the MWC. The Aggies won seven in a row before losing 62-57 in Saturday’s title game to the Aztecs, a team they couldn’t beat all season.
However, Ryan Odom’s team excels in numerous offensive categories, ranking 31st nationally in PPG, fifth in three-point percentage (39.4), ninth in assists and fourth in true shooting percentage (60.4). If you need more proof, the state of Utah ranks 18th in the country in the kenpom rankings.

The Aggies are led by guard Steven Ashworth, who is averaging 16.3 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds a night while shooting an incredible 44% from deep. Four more also score in double digits. When you consider this conference has four teams in the NCAA tournament, it shows how solid the state of Utah is. Getting hot from long range is dangerous for the Tigers, who allow opponents to shoot 35.7% from three-point territory.

Quite the turning point for Missouri
Getting out of the SEC is never easy, but Missouri did it, making its first big dance appearance since 2021. In fact, they have failed to make it past the first round in six previous games in March since 2011.
That being said, the Tigers finished fourth in the SEC in 2022-23, going 11-7 in conference action and 24-9 overall. Dennis Gates’ group defeated Tennessee in the SEC Quarterfinals before Alabama eliminated them. But Mizzou has done enough to earn a #7 spot in the March Madness bracket.

This is also a team that has no trouble hitting the rock, ranking 23rd in the NCAA with 79.5 PPG and 19th in offensive standings. Averaging 15.9 points, 6.3 boards and 2.5 cents, Kobe Brown is a big reason for their success. He also uses up 44.7% of his triples. Senior guard D’Moi Hodge, meanwhile, is ready to go out with a bang and also dropped 14.8 points a night on 40% three-point shooting.
Utah State vs Missouri Prediction
You have two explosive offenses here that could end up being a very entertaining competition. The Aggies have not made it past the opening round since 2001, while it has been over a decade since the Tigers advanced to the Round of 32. Personally, however, I like Utah State. They’re red hot, while Mizzou struggles defensively at times and has three players listed in top March Madness injuries.
Choice: State of Utah -1.5 (-110)
