Vinland Saga Season 2 Episode 1 Summary

A young man named Einar cuts down a tree in the forest, claiming he is training for war. his mother and sister, Lotta, find the idea a little far-fetched and lightly tease him about it. He reveals that his village was only recently rebuilt after the last invasion. He is committed to protecting people and avenging his father who died protecting them in the final battle. He asks his mother if she isn’t tired of losing, but she explains that they haven’t lost everything yet, which clearly changes Einar’s perspective a bit.

In the next scene, their village is attacked again. Houses and fields burn as Einar and his family hide in the nearby forest. As they try to run away, his mother is shot in the back with an arrow. Although she tries to save them, she encourages Einar and Lotta to leave them behind, especially since the attackers nearby notice their position. Instead of running, the two linger, giving the other men time to catch up. They try to take Lotta, but she is killed after stabbing one of the men in the shoulder. Too devastated to fight, Einar is dragged away from the scene as the men plan to sell him for money.

When we next see Einar sailing the sea on a boat, he has been sold into slavery. As a woman, he watches in terror as the men throw a young woman overboard on the verge of death to make room. When he protests the harsh treatment, he is only beaten and slowly realizes the reality of the situation. Despite this, he refuses to die.

Once ashore, the enslaved people are prepared for sale. When no one is looking, Einar runs into the nearby forest and eventually comes to a hut where he steals food. In the end, however, his efforts prove to be in vain as he is captured and made an example to the other slaves. The slave traders encourage the slaves to find a good master instead of trying to run away and make it on their own. Even as he is flogged, Einar perseveres by reminding himself of his commitment to life.

As Einar seems resigned to being a decent slave, viewers will recognize that Leif, comes to the slave market in search of a boy named Thorfinn. The slavers initially mistake Einar for Thorfinn, but Leif knows he isn’t since the two don’t resemble each other. They try to sell Einar anyway, but Leif has no interest in buying a slave. Despite this, he apologizes to Einar for wasting his time before leaving.

end explained

As Einar Leif goes to look, a tall blond man approaches and asks him to inspect him. After finding out that he was a farmer before, the man asks Einar if he would like to go to his farm with him. Einar agrees and is stunned to see how much his new owner’s farm reminds him of home.

As they walk about the farm, his new owner calls for Thorfinn to come over, and we get our first glimpse of the protagonist since the end of season one. Immediately Einar seems to recognize the name of the person Leif was looking for at the Slave Market, as Einar tells us this is the story of how he and Thorfinn first met.

I wasn’t sure at first where this episode was going, but after a few minutes I was immediately drawn into the struggle of this new character. Vinland Saga always knows how to write a compelling story, no matter who the episode focuses on, and honestly, Thorfinn’s appearance was worth the wait.

Studio MAPPAs Animation is always top notch when it comes to this series, especially when it comes to character design. It’s easy to say that they put a lot of effort into it Vinland sagaand it pays off and makes the episode so much more memorable.

Much of Thorfinn’s motivation in Season 1 revolved around getting revenge for his father. Now that he’s unable to fulfill that wish, it will be interesting to see where he ends up and what his new goals will be. The fun at Vinland saga right now is that it has the freedom to take Thorfinn’s story in just about any direction at the moment. Depending on where he lands, this already has the potential to be one of the best shows this season.
