Viral Video May Hold the Answer to Tipping Culture Controversy

Let’s stir the pot a little, shall we?

A common source of contention that has been brought up a lot on social media over the years has been tipping in the service industry.

Often the waiters in a restaurant express their frustration at serving a table of five people who ruin a bill but fail to tip the waiter much, if at all.

However, what we see more often today are businesses like coffee shops and even clothing boutiques whose employees rely on tips as a source of income. The problem that has arisen is that customers feel pressured not just to tip, but to tip more than just a dollar or two.

TikTok user Aubrey Grace took to the platform to show how this “pressure” is created, and I can’t say I mind much.

The video has reached over 1.5 million views and accumulated thousands of comments on the topic.

The video focuses on companies using iPads as a “cash register” with new technologies such as the Square Reader. Have you ever been in a situation like this? What makes it awkward is that the cashier is looking over the iPad while filling out the tip section, leading to the customer feeling pressured to leave a hefty tip.

This has happened to me before when I was filling out a paper receipt at the checkout and the cashier’s eyes were staring down at me.

Here’s the thing, I used to work in the service industry. I know exactly what it’s like to work your ass off to make sure customers are happy, only to see a $2 tip or nothing on the check when they leave. The disappointment and frustration is all too real.

Other TikTok users also took advantage of the video to comment on their thoughts.

There is no doubt that there will always be at least two opposing opinions on this subject. Someone will always be able to comment on what the tipping culture is like today. I don’t think that will ever change.
