Was it Kevin Clarke who took the stage at the Toronto mayoral debate?
A man believed to be long-term candidate Kevin Clarke attempted to storm the stage during the Toronto mayoral debate at the Daily Bread Food Bank Monday night.
Although only the best election candidates were invited to the event, that didn’t stop a man identified as Clarke on social media from making his voice heard as Ana Bailao, Brad Bradford, Olivia Chow, Mitzie Hunter and Josh Matlow watched.
The man tried to interrupt Hunter while she was answering a question about city-funded social programs before he was taken away by security.
“Hands off me, this is assault,” the man yelled during a live stream of the event, before later tearing down the stage backdrop.
Clarke was not immediately available by phone and an email asking for comment was not returned in a timely manner.
The long-time activist has attempted to run for MP, MPP and city councilor, finishing 11th in the 2022 mayoral race with 4,333 votes — about 0.79% support of all votes cast.
Moderated by TV and radio presenter Maggie John, the debate explored the candidates’ positions on issues such as affordability, food insecurity and poverty.
