Watch Alison Krauss Sing “Down At The River To Pray” from ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou’ Back In 2019

The first time I heard “Down at the River to Pray” was at one of my elementary school dance nights.

Since then I’ve been completely obsessed. I remember sitting in the audience after I finished dancing and being mesmerized as some of the more advanced girls danced to this song.

So when I saw that Alison Krauss I made a version of this song, granted for a movie I’ve never seen, I knew I was going to fall in love.

Even though she has some popular songs like “When You Say Nothing At All” and “Whiskey Lullaby” with Brad Paisley, both of which are absolutely amazing, I still feel that her voice is totally underrated.

Just look at them Oh brother where are you From the soundtrack alone you can tell that the handful of songs she is featured on are fantastic.

Of course, this also includes the traditional Christian hymn “Down at the River to Pray”.

The song originated from the African-American spiritual “The Good Old Way,” but gained popularity in part because of Krauss’ version in the film’s soundtrack.

The repetition used in the song is typical of many anthems, but makes the song catchy and, as I said, mesmerizing. I’m really not sure what this particular song paired with Krauss’ voice is all about, but I’ll tell you it literally makes me stop everything I do because I just stop and record it got to.

This 2019 performance is no different. I had to stop everything to watch and I wasn’t disappointed.

The performance is not accompanied by any instruments, initially only by Krauss’ voice. For the first verse and chorus, it’s literally just Krauss’s voice in this almost haunting rendition.

The whole song has always struck me as melancholy for some reason, and Krauss’ voice contributes to that, along with a softness that makes the song even more beautiful.

When the other musicians start singing along, you get goosebumps.

If you haven’t heard Alison Krauss sing this anthem, you need to see it.
