Cricket legends Sir Viv Richards and Javed Miandad recently took part in a fun cycling race at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
Both Richards and Miandad are involved as team mentors in the inaugural edition of the Pakistan Junior League (PJL). The PJL began on October 6th and will end on October 21st.
On Sunday October 16, the official Twitter handle of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video of Miandad and Richards taking part in a cycle race on the sidelines of the competition.
PCB shared the clip on social media with the caption:
“Show us a better video today, we’ll wait!”
Both retired greats seemed to enjoy the challenge and had beaming smiles as they went for a short spin.
Richards and Miandad are known as two of the best batsmen to grace the game. The Windies legend hit 8,540 runs in 121 Tests with an average of 50+ and accumulated 6,721 runs in 187 ODIs with an average of 47. He was part of the West Indies squad that won the 1975 and 1979 World Championships. Richards also claimed 32 Test wickets and 118 ODI scalps.
As for Miandad, he scored 8832 runs in 124 Tests at an average of 52.57 with 23 centuries. In 233 ODIs, the former Pakistani captain scored 7,381 runs with an average of 41.70 using eight centuries. Miandad was one of the key members of the Pakistan team that won their only 50-over world title in 1992.
“Miandad was a fighter and a tough competitor” – Sir Viv Richards
Richards is no stranger to Pakistani cricket. He was linked with the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and also managed them when they won the title in 2019.
Recalling his memorable association with Miandad after being named PJL mentor, Richards was quoted in an official PCB publication as saying:
“I am absolutely thrilled to be reunited with my mate Javed Miandad in the Pakistan Junior League, with whom I share some great memories from our playing days. Miandad has been a fighter and a tough competitor and it will be nice to work with him in the Pakistan Junior League.
“During my playing days I have always admired the talent of Pakistan and that belief has been reinforced during my time with Quetta Gladiators.”
PJL is a T20 league for under-19 cricketers conceived by PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja. It is played in a single league format. Six teams take part in the competition. The top four teams make it to the playoffs, with the final taking place on October 21st.
