Latto received her first major music award during the BET Awards on June 26, winning the Best New Artist title. The ‘Big Energy’ rapper’s real surprise was evident when she took the stage at the Microsoft Theater to accept her trophy from presenters Idris Elba and Will Packer. Wiping away tears, she exclaimed, “Oh my god, I said I wasn’t going to cry. She thanked God, her mother and her team before mentioning the Supreme Court’s recent decision, Roe v. Topping Wade, a topic raised by many other attendees during the ceremony. “There is pro choice. There’s never a man monitoring my body,” she added as the crowd cheered her on.
“If you know me and my story, it took a long time.”
The star concluded: “I’m so grateful. If you know me and my story, it took a long time. I am so grateful. My first award, and it’s my first award from Black Entertainment Television, period. And yell – out to all the other artists in the category, you all deserve it as much as I do.” Latto was nominated for the award alongside Muni Long, Tems, Baby Keem and Yung Bleu. Victory is really a long time coming for them an Atlanta native who’s been making a name for herself in the music industry since she was 10, winning the first season of Lifetime reality series The Rap Game in 2016 and has been dropping music since then.
Later during the BET Awards, Latto took the stage to perform her hit “Big Energy” and brought out Mariah Carey for a surprise cameo towards the end. Other big moments at the awards ceremony included Lizzo’s opening performance of “About Damn Time,” the star-studded tribute to Diddy, and Jazmine Sullivan’s heartfelt acceptance speech, which encouraged men to stand up for abortion rights.
