“We need to look at your bowling before the next game”

Rohit Sharma was disappointed in his bowlers as India lost to Australia in their first T20I on Tuesday 20 September at Mohali.

The hosts failed to defend 208 runs and conceded 55 runs in just 20 deliveries as they lost by four wickets. Matthew Wade (45* of 21) went wild with the racquet at PCA IS Bindra Stadium. The southpaw hammered the Indian bowlers who once struggled to hit the right line and length in the final overs.

With the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup due to start in less than a month, Rohit appeared concerned for his bowling squad. At the end of the game, the Indian captain emphasized:

“You can lean on defending 60 runs in the last four overs. We were unable to take that extra wicket. That was the turning point, if we had taken another wicket things would have been different.”

He added:

“You can’t score 200 points every day, you have to hit well. Hardik hit really well to get us there. We need to look at our bowling before the next game.”

The Men in Blue led the game until the 15th over before Wade started the carnage. Harshal Patel, returning from injury, conceded 49 runs while Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave away 52 runs.

This is sure to worry the Indian think tank as the T20 World Cup fast approaches.

Rohit pointed out that this game will help them understand where they are missing as a team ahead of the global T20 competition. He continued:

“I don’t think we bowled well. 200 is a good result to defend and we didn’t take our chances on the field. It was a great performance from our batters, but the bowlers weren’t quite there. There are things we need to see, but it was a great game for us to understand what went wrong.”

India are now trailing 1-0 in the three-game series.

“You can’t relax even when you hit 200” – Rohit Sharma

Despite the cheap loss of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, India batted extremely well, scoring 208 runs on the board. KL Rahul (55) and Suryakumar Yadav (46) provided the platform for Hardik Pandya (71*/30) to succeed in the end.

In response, Cameron Green helped Australia get off to a flying start, scoring a fast half-century (61). The Men in Blue managed to pull things back before Wade arrived down the middle to single-handedly win the game.

Rohit credited Australia for showing a brilliant performance with the racquet and chasing the goal with four balls. He concluded:

“We know this is a high-scoring place. You can’t relax even when you hit 200. We took wickets to an extent but they played really well.”

India will be busy ahead of the second game on Friday 23 September at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur.
