‘We’re going to need your boat’ – police commandeer family’s vessel in jet ski pursuit

A family was surprised on Sunday when two police officers approached them and asked them to use their boat to catch a suspected jet ski thief.

The Volusia Florida Sheriff’s Office released footage of the exchange and subsequent police pursuit, showing officers entering the water with the owner’s permission to find the suspect.

The dramatic chase came to a head when officers confronted the suspect, who was adrift and unable to start the jet ski, and told him to swim to the boat. However, the man said he didn’t know how.

“So you take a jet ski and you can’t swim?” the second officer yelled at him.

Using a rope to bring the jet ski closer, the suspect climbed aboard the family boat and was wheeled back to shore by police, who returned the boat to its owners.

The department later tweeted, “Just want to say thank you to an Ormond Beach family who let our deputies interrupt their Sunday afternoon to arrest a suspect on a stolen jet ski.”
