What did Owen say to Hannah at the end of The Last Thing He Told Me?
The original series from Apple TV+ The last thing he told me, with Jennifer Garner And Nikolaj Coster-Waldauhas finished with his Season One Finaleentitled “Sanctuary”.
The ending may stay true to the novel this miniseries is based on, but new viewers may be confused by the series’ cryptic ending. Let’s take a closer look at the last scene.
What does Owen say to Hannah at the end?
Five years after Owen’s disappearance, Hannah opens an exhibition of her work. She notices a man looking through her exhibition brochures. He has a wooden wedding ring, just like Owen’s. At that moment, Hannah realizes that the man in front of her is her missing husband.
He looks a little different from the last time she saw him. He hides under a baseball cap and has a shaggy, long beard. Shocked, Hannah drops all of her brochures. Owen comes over to help her pick it up. He strokes her hand and whispers in her ear, “The boys it could be still love you.” Then Owen walks away and disappears from her life again.
What does “the supposed boys still love you” mean?
In a flashback in Episode 2, “The Day After”, Owen asks Hannah about her past friends. He refers to them as “the guys that could have been,” explaining that this is a term Bailey uses for old friends. It’s just a silly term for the guys who could be the ones who didn’t make it or the ones who got away.
When Owen says “the boys might still love you,” he now includes himself in that group of people. He is now a former friend of Hannah’s. They are no longer together because Owen chose to leave to protect Hannah and Bailey.
Owen may have made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety of his loved ones, but he still loves Hannah dearly. That little statement carries a lot of weight. Owen hints that he is no longer with Hannah and that she should move on, but also says that he still loves her and that he will always love her.
Why is Owen hiding in The Last Thing He Told Me?
Owen disappears in the first part of the series, fleeing the law and the criminals from his past. Many years ago he was caught up by the mafia and had to change his identity and that of his daughter to protect them both from those who wanted Owen dead.
When the company he works for is investigated by the FBI, his new identity becomes public knowledge. Owen fears the mob is after him and his family now that they know his whereabouts and new identity.
Owen saved for this tragic event and left Bailey a bag of money to live on. He asks Hannah to protect Bailey in a cryptic note, leaving them both behind forever. Hannah is later forced to make a deal with the mafia to protect Bailey, but Owen is never able to return to his family.
In the series’ final scene, he makes the risky decision to see Hannah face-to-face for the first time in five years, if only for a few seconds. This adds another layer of sadness to an already heartbreaking storyline.
