Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was released in theaters and ups the ante and reach of the first film by expanding into a geopolitical conflict while paying homage to the late Chadwick Boseman. It is Marvel’s latest film and introduces Namor to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Namor is another mutant that the MCU has shown us that has undergone many changes compared to its comic book counterpart.
Who is Namor?
Namor is one of the first Marvel Comics heroes, featured in 1939 in one of the earliest issues in the company’s publishing history. His full name is Namor the Sub-Marinerand he rules Atlantis. He’s known as Marvel’s first mutant, although he wasn’t bestowed that title until decades after his appearance. His abilities include the ability to breathe underwater and withstand tremendous pressure, having wings on his feet meaning he can fly, and having superhuman strength.
He has a deep hatred of surface dwellers in particular wakanda. In the comic storyline Avengers vs X-Men, Namor causes a massive tidal wave that devastates the land. However, Namor is not a full-fledged villain, but more of an anti-hero. He doesn’t want to expand his power or influence, he just wants to protect his people.
Namor almost never appeared in the MCU, as complicated rights issues surrounding the character were not resolved until late 2018.
in the Wakanda forever, Namor’s origins have fundamentally changed. He’s not the first mutant in the MCU (this award goes to Professor X’s appearance in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), and he’s not from Atlantis either. Namor hails from the Mesoamerican-inspired city of Talokana change made to distinguish her from other, many appearances of Atlantis.
What is Namor’s ethnicity?
Namor is from Mexico, which means he is Mexican. He was born in the 16th century to his mother and an unknown father. That vibranium Plant influenced his biology, allowing him to breathe underwater and have many other gifts.
This differs from the comics, where Namor is the son of Leonard McKenzie, who is from Boston, Massachusetts, and Princess Fen of Atlantis. He is of dual ancestry here, white and Atlantean. Namor has very similar origins to those of Aquamansince he was also born of human and Atlantean parents.
Namor’s story in Wakanda forever resembles many stories of indigenous peoples around the world where European invaders come over and take their lands and kill them. In this way, Namor is said to have a stronger connection to the Wakandashow he understands this fight. This makes it more compelling and fits in with exploring other cultures Black Panther is known for.
Is Namor Mayan or Aztec?
During the time that Namor is born, the Spanish conquistadors take over the country of Mexico. He belongs to the indigenous people, the Aztecs, who live in central Mexico.
Aztec pyramids seen in the film, with shrines to the Aztec god of sun and war, Huitzilopochtliand the god of rain and fertility, Tlaloc. It is this latter god that served as inspiration for the name Talokan. The city itself has inspirations from across Central America.
Aztecs lived from about 1300 to 1521 when the Spanish conquistadors wiped them out. They also brought diseases to the island, something that Wakanda forever shows.
The Maya were a civilization that lived around 2,600 BC. and created her empire in Central America. They lived until about 900 AD when they left their cities. It is not fully known why this happened, but historians have suggested many reasons, such as environmental degradation or warfare.
Namor lives in the 16th century and is therefore an Aztec. The Vibranium-enriched plant that his mother had grants him an extremely long life.
