What happened at the end of Industry?

Industry was the surprise hit of 2020 and fans will be thrilled it’s coming back – so here’s our recap of season one, just in case you need a gentle nudge.

Season 2 will pick up where the last series left off – and we’re pretty confident Harper won’t be overly popular…

By the end of the first series, she had made a very reckless decision.

And viewers are about to witness the collapse.

Here’s everything you need to know about Industry Season 1 in our roundup.

Industry Season 1 recap – what is the show about?

Industry Season 1 has thrown five young, ambitious trainees into the ruthless, cutthroat world of banking.

Harper, Yasmin, Gus, Hari and Robert had one job – to survive in the pressure cooker environment of Pierpoint & Co’s trading room.

As if the stress of investing other people’s money wasn’t enough, they were forced to work side-by-side with bullies, bigots, and sex plagues.

Terrible for them, GREAT for us viewers.

The American Harper Stern, cast as an outsider, also had the problem of hiding a rather big secret.

That she had never really graduated…

With few graduate jobs available, it was unclear who would land a coveted clerk job.

Who got a job at the end of Industry season 1?

Tragically, in the first episode of Industry, a young graduate died.

Hari – played by Informant star Nabhaan Rizwan – literally worked himself to death.

He accepted the challenge of his new role by staying up all night, running with energy drinks and sleeping on the office toilet floor before his untimely death.

He died in the Pierpoint & Co. toilets.

In the awkward scenes that followed, the company did not adequately address the death.

Instead, they resumed business as usual and swept his death under the rug.

And that’s pretty much all you need to know about management in the toxic environment, much like the game rules.

Gus later decided to gamble away his chances with the company rather than apply for one of the jobs.

The Oxford graduate dreamed of becoming Prime Minister and appeared to be the only one not willing to compromise himself for a job.

He gave a brilliantly inappropriate speech making known his feelings towards Pierpoint and appeared to walk away from the drama.

Meanwhile, Harper and Yasmin landed jobs while Robert’s future remained uncertain.

However, we do know from the Season 2 trailer (below) that he actually got a job!

Industry Season 1 Recap: What happened at the end of Episode 8?

In the final episode of season one, Harper made a deal with the devil…

She chose to bring back her toxic boss, Eric Tao, for Sara Dhadwal (who wanted the young graduate to help her change the culture at Pierpoint).

The decision saved her job but destroyed her relationship with Daria Greenock (Freya Mavor), who was fired to make room for Eric.

Ultimately, Harper threw Daria under the bus by claiming that Daria forced her to accuse Eric of threatening her safety at work.

The decision also made Harper very unpopular with her friend Yasmin.

Viewers realized that the quietly confident Harper was perhaps the most ruthless of the group — perhaps because of her upbringing.

By the time the series began, she had lost the company and her clients £150,000.

What’s more, her boss discovered Eric Harper’s lie about her past — that she didn’t have a degree.

However, her boss agreed to turn a blind eye to Harper’s lie.

Which in a way explains why she ends up supporting Eric despite his mistakes.

By the end of season one, it was clear that Harper would always put himself first.

Viewers also saw that everyone was looking to use Harper for their own ends – Daria, Eric and Sara – so while Harper is a player, she’s also a pawn.

Co-creator Konrad Kay explained that the intention of the entire series was to “lure” the audience into expecting Harper to end up doing the right thing before expectations get messed up.

What happened to Robert and Yasmin?

Elsewhere in the season one finale, Yasmin finally came out of her unhappy relationship with the gross Seb.

But she didn’t go straight into colleague Robert’s arms (like we wanted).

Viewers witnessed the tangible sexual chemistry between Yasmin and Robert throughout Season 1.

But aside from a few teases and a three-way kiss with Harper, nothing serious happened between them.

However, we’d be surprised if that wasn’t the case in Season 2!

In the Season 1 finale, called Reduction in Force, Yasmin also had the difficult decision of deciding whether or not to make a formal charge against Kenny or to be a “team player”.

Ultimately, Yasmin decided to keep her job.

Co-creator Mickey Down called Kenny “the show’s purest villain,” noting that his behavior was the most objectively horrifying of any character.

By the end of Industry Season 1, Yasmin and Harper’s friendship is in tatters.

When she finds out what Harper did to Daria, Yasmin confronts her friend.

The couple had an argument on the floor, with Harper calling Yasmin weak and hypocritical.

What did Eric say in front of Felim’s wife?

Viewers know Eric said something damning in front of Felim Bichan’s wife.

Felim was Pierpoint’s biggest customer – until Eric’s behavior deeply offended him.

So what did Eric say in front of Felim’s wife?

Co-creator Mickey Down says, “We’ll never say that!

“Maybe we can save that next season. We know what it is.”

He adds: “That scene [in the lift] at the end of episode eight where Eric doesn’t remember is one of my favorite scenes in the whole series.

“I love the fact that he laughs, and then [Harper] can’t help but laugh.

“Ken [Leung, who plays Eric] is really good at everything he does on the show, but this scene is particularly good.”

Industry returns to HBO, BBC One and BBC iPlayer for Season 2 on Monday 1st August 2022.
