What is happening to CNN? Matt Gaetz calls out ‘significantly changed’ network with two-word stunner

Good. This is one thing that wasn’t on many people’s 2023 bingo cards.

But if you got “GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz kicking off the new year with heartfelt praise for CNN” on your bingo card, congratulations.

Gaetz, the outspoken Republican arsonist who led initial opposition to Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s path to the gavel, took to Twitter to express his gratitude to The Clinton News Network of all places.

“@CNN is definitely changing,” Gaetz tweeted. “Today a serious host asked me serious questions about serious topics. It wasn’t propaganda for either side. Thanks @smerconish for the thoughtful discussion.”

If it took you a second to digest this, you’re not the only one.

Seeing the two words “thank you” written across CNN in a non-joking manner is always harrowing to see.

To paraphrase Gaetz, this is a very serious Republican delivering serious praise on a serious public platform for a network that insists on playing damage control for the beleaguered Biden administration.

Do you think CNN can actually change its ways?

This is, after all, the same CNN that was once too distracted to notice the New Year, the same CNN that needed an on-air therapy session about Elon Musk, and the same CNN that was trying to garner sympathy for a transgender killer.

And yet, if you actually watch the entire clip for Gaetz’s interview with CNN host Michael Smerconish, it’s hard to argue that the two didn’t have a perfectly civilized interview on a variety of topics, from camera placement in Congress to on the George Santos controversy.

You can watch the whole clip below:

Well, there’s one big caveat to all the Gaetz ravings: Michael Smerconish is a true, traditional liberal.

It might sound like he’s cut from the same cloth as the rest of his CNN type, but note the key difference: Smerconish is a liberal, not a leftist. That means Smerconish still believes in the traditional liberal adage: “I don’t agree with what you have to say, but I will defend your right to say it to the death.”

That alone puts Smerconish at odds with his more left-leaning, younger contemporaries.

It’s hard to say that this lonely interview will heal years of scars in the ongoing culture clashes between left and right.

But at least it’s an encouraging sign that it’s still possible for diametrically opposed ideologies to have a civil discussion, even in today’s aggressive political climate.
