What time of day do Aldi, Lidl, Tesco and more reduce food?

This can be anything from a stack of yogurt to a selection of sushi to a pack of meat. Many shoppers often have to queue at grocery shelves to find the day’s deal.

For those wondering the best time of day to go to a supermarket while the discounted products are being handed out: consumer advocates Which? revealed everything.

At what time of the day do supermarkets lower prices?

You can usually find a section with products marked with yellow “Reduced” stickers in larger supermarkets and some convenience stores.

These are usually products that are approaching their sell-by or use-by dates.

Aldi

The supermarket told Which? that the times when items go on sale will vary from store to store but will likely be around the time the store closes.

At Aldi, fresh products with a red sticker, such as bread, meat, fruit and vegetables, are rated either 30% or 75% on the last day of shelf life before closing time.

The company also offers a 30% discount on unused groceries such as cereal, pasta and canned food if the packaging feels it is not in good condition.

MS

Similar to AldiM&S also said the times at which items are reduced will depend on each store but will likely be close to closing time.

Asda

This supermarket’s yellow stickers are usually placed on items twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening.

Lidl

Lidl Similar to Asda, applying “yellow stickers” also works. It said which? that employees usually give discounts first thing in the morning and then a few hours before closing time, but can also do this during the day.

Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose

All three of these supermarkets told Which? that there are no specific times when store associates make “yellow sticker” price cuts.

Research by the consumer advocate found shoppers could save £17 on a basket of Aldi items compared to the most expensive store.

The monthly analysis compares the prices of a store, this time made up of 39 popular grocery stores in eight of the UK’s largest supermarkets.

The cheapest supermarket this month was Aldi, where a basket cost a monthly average of £69.99.

Lidl trailed Aldi by a margin of 65p (£70.64), widening the gap on the previous month, which was just a margin of 25p.

The same store at Waitrose averaged £87.33, a difference of £17.34 – or 24.7% more.
