Audrey Roberts on Coronation Street is the queen of the cobbles!
But the matriarch of the Tilsley/Platt clan is in big trouble right now.
With aging taking its toll, Audrey has been lashing out at everyone around her and now she’s had a horrific accident that has put her life on the line.
Does Audrey survive?
Audrey’s early days on Coronation Street
Audrey first appeared at daughter Gail Potter’s party celebrating her engagement to Brian Tilsley in 1979.
She and Gail had a fractious relationship thanks to Audrey, who has been a somewhat absent mother over the years!
Audrey flew in and out of Corrie for a couple of years before catching the attention of local dignitary Alf Roberts.
The couple married and Audrey became a full-time member of The Street in 1985.
Audrey is a hairdresser by trade and has owned both Audrey’s Salon and Trim Up North Barbers Shop.
How old is Audrey?
Audrey was born on July 23, 1940.
She is currently 81 years old and will be 82 next month.
She had her children young when she was just 17 and 18 years old.
Audrey’s secret son
In 1996, Audrey was shocked when her son, whom she had given up for adoption when she was 17, showed up on the street.
Stephen Reid became popular in Weatherfield – and Audrey’s companion Alma Baldwin developed strong feelings for him.
He has returned to his native Canada but is often mentioned and family visits. Audrey’s grandson, Nick Tilsley, even lived with his uncle Stephen for a time.
And it was Stephen who gave Sarah a job in Milan as he expanded his business empire into Europe.
Stephen will return on Friday June 23rd to save his mother.
What happened to Audrey’s husband Alf?
Audrey was devastated when her Alfie died on Nick’s 18th birthday.
She threw herself into work and ran for council, just like Alf had done.
Audrey and her best friend Alma got into all kinds of trouble until Alma passed away in 2001.
Audrey vs. Richard Hillman
It was Audrey who first suspected that her son-in-law, Richard Hillman, might not be the fine, honest man he made himself out to be.
Audrey challenged Richard at the funeral of his murder victim Maxine Peacock – much to the shock of mourners. But Ken Barlow believed her – although no one else did until Archie Shuttleworth and Norris Cole also suspected Richard.
Audrey’s belief that Richard was a murderer drove a wedge between her and Gail, but after the truth was out they reconciled.
Scammer Lewis Archer
When Audrey met the suave Lewis Archer, she was smitten, even when she found out he was an escort.
Lewis claimed he loves her too and the couple were planning to buy a hotel in Greece together. But Lewis wasn’t honest and instead stole money from the bookies and ran away.
When he reappeared in Weatherfield, Audrey fell under his charm again. He convinced her that he was a changed man and she agreed to a plan hatched by Gail to test his feelings.
When Lewis found out Audrey was involved in everything, he was shocked and hurt. And when Gail developed feelings for him, he saw a chance for revenge.
He scammed Gail out of the contents of her bank account and left a video message explaining what he had done before escaping.
Lewis returned once more in 2018. Archie had died by then, leaving Audrey £80,000 in his will.
No one trusted Lewis to resist the temptation – especially since he had returned with yet another scam. But he insisted on being honest.
When Lewis died of a heart attack, Audrey was heartbroken. And when she discovered the £80,000 was missing, she thought everyone was right to distrust Lewis.
But actually, Nick had stolen the money – and Lewis had been telling the truth.
What’s up with Audrey on Coronation Street?
Aud has been the head of the Platt family for so long, we can’t imagine Coronation Street without her.
But recently, Audrey’s eyesight has been failing and her love of a cheeky drink has raised some concerns.
She fended off all attempts to help, but finally had her eyes examined after several car accidents. Audrey was diagnosed with cataracts and underwent surgery to have them removed.
But more serious is her drinking.
She drinks G&T after G&T followed by several glasses of wine. She even banged on the Rover’s door at opening time, demanding a drink on Wednesday 23 June.
And then she got so pumped she fired everyone at the hairdresser and spent most of her day flirting with Ryan Connor.
No one could get through to her and she insisted she had no drinking problem.
As she banished everyone and insisted that she wanted to be left alone, Audrey fell and was pinned under a motorcycle.
She called for help, but no one could hear her…
Does Audrey die on Coronation Street?
Audrey will survive this incident – but will she admit that she needs help?
On Friday (June 24th) Audrey is discovered by Brian and Elaine after spending the night captive at the hairdresser’s.
At that moment, Stephen emerges from a taxi. He breaks down the door and is shocked to find that Audrey is barely conscious.
The Platts, meanwhile, called in resident alcoholic Peter Barlow to help them understand how to help Audrey.
The meeting is interrupted by Brian telling them what happened.
Stephen is angry at the family for not realizing that Audrey was missing all night.
Gail is afraid her mother will die.
Audrey is taken to the hospital where she is recovering.
Stephen manages to calm things down and broker peace between Gail and Audrey, but can he help his mother get well?
As Gail and her brother try to work together to help Audrey, will she admit she has a problem and get help?
And is drinking everything? Or is it loneliness? Could she be depressed? What caused her love of a sassy drink to become this huge issue?

Who plays Audrey?
Audrey is played by accomplished actress Sue Nicholls. Sue was born on November 23, 1943, making her 78 years old – making her three years younger than Audrey.
Sue was already on Crossroads and had a hit single when she landed the role of Audrey.
And while at Corrie, Sue has also had roles in Rentaghost, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin and The Professionals.
She was married to Mark Eden, who played Alan Bradley, from 1993 until his death last year.
In 2011, a senior nurse named Anna Bianconi-Moore, who worked in the dermatology department at Addenbroke’s Hospital, was watching Corrie when she noticed a mole on Sue’s shoulder. She contacted the show and advised her to have it checked out.
ITV’s GP referred Sue to a specialist and she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Thankfully, Sue recovered after her mole treatment and removal.
