“When he came up against me, he couldn’t do anything”

FC Sheriff defender Patrick Kpozo has spoken out in favor of restraining Manchester United striker Antony when the two meet in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday (27 October).

The Ghanaian did well in the second leg on 15 September against the Red Devils’ new signing, who was in just his third game for the club. Manchester United won the game 2-0 thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Although it was widely expected that Antony would cause the sheriff a lot of trouble, Kpozo handled him well. The Brazilian won six of his ten ground duels and had a 50% successful dribbling rate.

Ahead of today’s clash at Old Trafford, Kpozo pointed to the second leg and assured he would do well again against the troubled Brazilian. He told BBC Sport Africa:

“People thought Antony was going to ‘kill’ me in the first game. He’s a very good player but when he played me there was nothing he could do. Still, they say again he’s going to ‘kill’ me again in the game at Old Trafford.”

He added:

“I’m sure he’ll do anything to prove himself, but I believe in myself. I’m strong, fast, and if I stay close to him, he has nowhere to go. I have him.”

Antony has scored three goals in ten appearances for Manchester United in all competitions since his £86million move from Ajax in the summer.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag on her focus ahead of the Sheriff clash

The Red Devils started their UEFA Europa League season on a terrible note, losing 1-0 to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford. However, they rebounded and won their next three games in the competition.

A win or draw against FC Sheriff today would see Manchester United qualify for the knockout rounds. However, they would like to win today and then beat Real Sociedad in their last game to lead the group.

When asked if they had that in mind, Erik ten Hag said (via manutd.com):

“Definitely. But from one step to the next, the first thing we have to do is win the next game. That’s tomorrow, so focus 100 percent on that and don’t look too far ahead because then you lose focus. Focus on one thing – win the next game.”

Manchester United meet Real Sociedad away on November 3 in what could decide who wins Group E. The group winners don’t have to take part in the play-offs, which would be a great boon in a packed schedule.
