The Chicago Bulls’ Nikola Vucevic put together a nice spread of the past few games. While there’s certainly been some trade talk surrounding the big man, he plays some of the best basketball of his time in Chicago and the Bulls may be reluctant to finalize a deal.
Of course, if Chicago gets the right offer, the Bulls might consider taking that, but Vucevic is quietly putting together an all-star streak. He is currently averaging 17.5 points per game and 10.9 rebounds while shooting 52.1%, with 37.4% from 3-point range.
Vucevic grew up in Belgium after being born in Switzerland. He then relocated to Montenegro for much of his teenage years before beginning his high school and college career in California. Vucevic attended the University of Southern California.
Nikola Vucevic’s hometown
Nikola Vucevic grew up in Belgium for most of his youth and that’s why he says the transition to America was a little more difficult than just playing basketball.
“The language was a big barrier for me,” said Vucevic. “I didn’t know much English when I came here. I could understand a good amount of it, but I didn’t really speak much. That was the biggest thing for me.
“It was just very different from where I grew up. The hardest thing for me was leaving all my family and friends and going into the unknown. But at the same time I was excited to come to the United States.
“When you are in Europe you watch all these films when you are young. You watch sports on TV, the NBA and college. You see all these people, you see what it’s like here, and you want to be a part of it.
“It was tough for me. I often wanted to go back to my friends and family in Europe. It was tough but they helped me a lot to ease the transition. When I got into college (at USC), I met a lot of people everywhere, there were more foreign kids, so it was easier for me to adjust and get used to it.
“But even now, when I go home and come back here, I always get a bit homesick. There’s a week or two when it’s hard for me because home will always be home to me.”
America was his home, more than 1,000 miles from where he was originally born. While the transition has been a difficult one for Nikola Vucevic, he has beaten the odds and continued to show he can be a help to NBA teams. He’s been an All-Star twice before, and maybe another good season could earn him his next nod.
