The Noel Diary is a romantic comedy that is based on a Bestselling book by Richard Paul Evans. The film follows the story of an author named Jacob Turner, who receives a phone call telling him that his estranged mother, whom he has not seen in twenty years, has died.

Jacob has inherited his mother’s house, and during the holiday season he returns to the house to settle the scores both mentally and physically. However, the house itself is a little in turmoil as his mother seems to be a bit hoarding, so there’s a lot of luggage for Jacob when he arrives. When he finds an old diary and receives a visitor, Rachel, who is also searching for answers in the past, they decide to team up to find meaning in their lives. Of course, their meeting could become more than just allies and friends.

Where is The Noel Diary filmed?

That Noel’s diary is set in Connecticut, so luckily the filmmakers were able to film on location to ensure the film felt authentic. Some liberties might have been taken though, as is often the case in these things, so the house where the main story unfolds is said to be Bridgeportis actually on Westport’s Washington Avenue.

However, a Bridgeport location can be seen at a book signing with Jacob that takes place in The mechanics and Farmers Savings Bank that doubles for a scene that appears to be taking place in Chicago. Other locations include Remo’s Italian Restaurant in Stamford. This was used as a meeting place for the main characters Jacob and Rachel, The Griswald Inn in Essex was raised to vouch for it Maple Falls Innand RJ Julia Bookseller in the city of Madison was used for the scene where Rachel buys a copy of Jacob’s best sellers. Canaan City Hall appears to have been used to represent downtown Maple Falls and it should be noted that the town of Maple Falls is a fictional creation for the film.

Why did The Noel Diary film in these locations?

Of course, from a filmmaking perspective, it’s often best to use the location where the film is set. However, cost is often an issue in these situations and it can be expensive for producers to film where the scene is set.

There are several ways directors can get around this, and there are some famous filming locations that are inexpensive and can double down for reality. The Noel Diary was originally intended to be filmed in Vancouver, and film location fans will know that this is a focal point due to the long daylight hours, longer “golden hours” and milder winter allowing for longer filming times, but probably more important that it cheaper to shoot there as there are tax breaks that greatly reduce the cost of filming there.

But because of the pandemic The Noel Diary had to abandon their original plan to shoot there and the only other option was to shoot in a real location. Although more expensive, it must be said that if you live in Connecticut and are watching this film you will be delighted to see that real film locations are used.
