Who do the Chiefs play next in the AFC Championship game? Kansas City’s playoff path explained

The Kansas City Chiefs struggled a little but managed to beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 and qualify for the AFC Championship Game to be played next weekend.

Kansas City took a heavy hit during the game. Patrick Mahomes got off to a very good start but suffered a high ankle sprain in a game in which Jaguars defender Arden Key fell over his leg, affecting his mobility and sending him to the dressing room for trials. Although the x-rays were negative, he was far from healthy.

The Chiefs now have eight days until the AFC Championship Game to allow Mahomes to recover. Although they don’t know their opponents yet, rest assured that they are ready for a big brawl.

They will discover their opponents on Sunday after the other game of the AFC Divisional Round between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills.

Will Mahomes play for the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game?

It’s too early to tell but he’ll likely play. He returned to the game against the Jaguars and finished the game despite being in significant pain. With a week off and healing from his injury, there’s a good chance he’ll be available for the Chiefs.

Now there’s an interesting change for next week’s game.

Kansas City hold first place in the AFC, but they are not guaranteed to play the AFC Championship Game at home. If Cincinnati beats Buffalo, the Chiefs will host the game.

But if Buffalo beats Cincinnati, the AFC championship game will move to a neutral field at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium, taking home field advantage away from Kansas City.

This was an NFL change based on what emerged in Week 17 when the Cincinnati Bengals and Buffalo Bills played football Monday night. Bills safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest, had to do CPR on the field and the game was suspended – and later canceled by the league.

Because the game had important playoff seeding implications, the league decided that the Chiefs would earn first seed based on their winning percentage, but would not get home field if they played the Bills in the playoffs.

In the NFC, the two division games are the New York Giants vs. the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys vs. the San Francisco 49ers.
