Who is Detective Avraham Avraham and what is his “superpower”? in the Peacock series The Calling? Let’s dive deep.
peacock latest crime drama, The calling, introduces a different type of protagonist who challenges the hero cop trope. lies at the center of the narrative Detective Avraham Avraham (played by Jeff Wilbusch), a man deeply rooted in his Jewish faith. His uncanny ability to crack tough cases is directly influenced by his beliefs.
Who is Detective Avraham and what is different about him?
Avi’s first scenes are shown from a newcomer’s perspective Detective Janine Harris. She first meets him at a crime scene where, to her surprise, she watches the man take a moment to say a Hebrew prayer for the victim. In the interrogation room, Avi’s unique ability to get under a person’s skin helps get the suspect into a full and tearful confession. When Janine asks her new colleague how he works, his answer comes straight from the teachings of the Talmud, “[…] Every person is entitled to infinite respect and care. Everyone is valuable.”
Not only does Janine treat each person, even the suspects, with respect and compassion, but she also notes that her new partner doesn’t let go of his humanity. Working at the NYPD and seeing the worst that humanity has to offer can leave more cops feeling jaded. Not Avi. He appears as someone who has not lost himself in a sea of despair. Despite dealing with the horrible on a daily basis, Avi uses his beliefs as a kind of spiritual anchor.
As the season progresses, the show reveals more important details about the protagonist’s unique methods. He likes to sit in victims’ rooms to get a sense of who they were as a person. He tends to get too close to his cases and get too emotionally involved. He also draws fish. Although the drawings make little sense, they seem to help Avi focus and draw the right conclusions for each case. Unlike other hero cops on TV, Avi speaks softly and exhibits an almost permanently calm demeanor, a major asset when it comes to getting suspects to trust him enough to take their souls.
Why did Detective Avraham go to the police?
In the first season of The calling, we slowly learn more about Avi’s past and his motivations. The talented detective lost his father at a young age and he believes it was murder. A young Avraham was walking his dog when he heard his father fall from their balcony. Although police ruled the death a homicide, the killer was never caught. Since joining the police force, Avi has yet to investigate his father’s murder. It’s not directly explained why, but it’s heavily implied that the detective is afraid of what he might find in his parents’ file.
Avi has several dreams and visions of his father while investigating the season’s cases. In episode 5 he asks his rabbi what he remembers about the deceased, whose answer reveals that darkness lurked within Avi’s father. In the show’s finale, the homeless professor John Wentworth is found murdered with the word “father” written in Hebrew in blood, meaning Avi may ultimately be forced to investigate his father’s case as part of a new investigation.
what is Detective Avrahams “superpower”?
Avi appears to be having visions, hallucinations of the missing persons he’s investigating, and even a few cryptic dreams. He can also make breakthroughs in his cases by drawing fish. Despite all of this, there is no real indication that Detective Avraham has any supernatural abilities. Instead, his faith and belief in humanity are his true “superpowers.” Avi stops frequently to pray synagogue throughout the day he recites them Kaddish of the Mourners about the corpses he encounters at work and regularly stands Shomer for deceased members of his faith. His beliefs, teachings, and appreciation for humanity make him a unique character.
