Who Is Replacing Milly Alcock and Emily Carey on ‘House of the Dragon’?

house of the dragon is about to suffer its most staggering losses yet, and it’s not even a character death.

As season one of HBO game of Thrones As the prequel reaches its midpoint, the drama stands poised to unleash its most controversial twist yet: Milly Alcock and Emily Carey, The actors who played Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower respectively in the last five episodes will leave the show and be replaced entirely by two different actors. While they’re the most prominent recasts on the board, they’re not alone. Here are the big new makeovers you can expect house of the dragon when it opens its doors on Sunday evening.

What’s happening?

house of the dragon Viewers are already accustomed to time jumps within the story, but they will experience the most dramatic yet in Sunday night’s sixth episode, aptly titled “The Princess and the Queen,” set some 10 years after the events of the fifth episode. As a result, new actors will play Rhaenyra and Alicent: Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke, take over the roles from the outgoing Milly Alcock and Emily Carey.

That’s right: The versions of Rhaenyra and Alicent you’ve come to know (and maybe even love) over the last five episodes will no longer be on the show starting this Sunday. D’Arcy and Cooke will play Rhaenyra and Alicent for the duration of their characters’ tenure on the show, however long that may be.

Who are you?

Emma D’Arcy (who identifies as non-binary and uses she/them pronouns) will take on the role of Rhaenyra, entering the equation with previous leading actor roles on television shows Wanderlust and seeker of truth. While Sunday marks D’Arcy’s first official screen appearance, it’s not the first time you’ve done it heard them on the show. D’Arcy’s voice was featured in the opening scene of house of dragon, Narrating the accession of her character’s father, Viserys (Paddy Considine).

Olivia Cooke slips into the role of Queen Alicent and comes to house of the dragon through many different projects including starring roles in shows and films like bates motel, sound of metal, and more. For her part, this next episode marks the first time we see Cooke in any capacity house of the dragon.

Why are we doing this?

That’s the age old question, isn’t it? We can’t answer it generally, but we can at least answer it so far house of the dragon is concerned.

George RR Martin‘s fire & blood, the book on which dragon is based, spans centuries, and focuses on various actors of the Targaryen dynasty. The period house of the dragon focuses on about 30 years, maybe even longer depending on when showrunner Ryan Condal and his creative colleagues decide to end the series. The 10 year time jump between episodes five and six brings us closer to the heart of this particular story, where the choices Rhaenyra and Alicent make for themselves and their families drive the drama from that point forward.

For what it’s worth, this will almost certainly be the series’ most drastic time warp, unless dragon one day takes an anthological turn and focuses on a very different part of Targaryen rule.

Will it work?

Honestly, that’s the biggest question I’ve ever had house of the dragon all season long. Viewers had five episodes to invest in Alcock and Carey’s roles as Rhaenyra and Alicent. While the story requires following their exploits as adults, the changes follow an entire half-season spent on riveting work by two young breakout stars. Asking audiences to move away from these groundbreaking twists is by no means easy.
