India beat New Zealand by eight wickets in yesterday’s one-day game at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur.
The Men in Blue Pacers, who went bowling first after winning the toss, were on top form as the Kiwis were knocked out for 108 in 34.3 overs. It took the hosts just 20.1 overs to pursue the goal, losing just two wickets in the process.
Mohammed Shami gave India a brilliant start with the ball, cleaning Finn Allen to a duck in the first over. India never looked back after that. Mohammed Siraj produced a beauty to let down Henry Nicholls (2). Daryl Mitchell (1) and Devon Conway (7) also died cheaply, breaking catches on Shami and Hardik Pandya, respectively.
New Zealand lost half their side for 15 in 11 overs when skipper Tom Latham (1 of 17) poked on a wide delivery outside Shardul Thakur’s stump and presented an easy catch to the first slip. Glenn Phillips (36) added 41 runs with Michael Bracewell (22) and 47 with Mitchell Santner (27). However, visitors suffered from the lack of major partnerships.
Shami returned to sack Bracewell with a bouncer while Pandya outwitted Santner with a slower delivery and called for a big jab. Phillips’ stint in the fold ended in disappointment as he took a long jump from Washington Sundar to deep Midwicket. Lockie Ferguson (1) fell the same way as the same bowler while Kuldeep Yadav ended New Zealand’s innings by catching Blair Tickner (2) lbw.
Team India came home in the chase as skipper Rohit Sharma (51/50) and Shubman Gill (40*/53) added 72 for the opening wicket. The stand was broken when Henry Shipley previously had a Rohit leg.
Santner put on a beauty that made Virat Kohli (11th) stumble. Gill then hit the winning runs and lofted Santner via mid-on for a series-clinching boundary.

Shami laid the foundation for India’s victory with a dominant bowling show. His early dismissal of Allen set the tone of the game. He kept the Kiwis batters on the back foot from the start. Pandya interfered with two important scalps while keeping things very tight.
In the chase, Rohit hit an impressive fifty while Gill once again looked good throughout his unbeaten 40.
Team India Pacer Shami was voted Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance in Raipur.
