Why Does Coffee Make You Poop? A doctor explains

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the morning and many people rely on it for a boost of energy to get through the day. Not only does it provide energy, but Coffee has also proven to be numerous long-lasting health benefits if consumed in moderation. However some coffee drinker may also find that they use the bathroom more after enjoying their morning cup of joe, leading us to ask, “Why does coffee make you poop?”

If you’re someone who has ever felt like running to the bathroom after finishing your coffee, you’re not alone. For example, some people have turned to things like coffee enemas to relieve constipation. Likewise, a study surveying 92 participants – 58 men and 34 women – found that 29% of the entire cohort reported pooping within just 30 minutes of finishing a cup of coffee.

To better understand the reasons behind these digestive benefits of coffee, we turned to two doctors, Adil Maqbool, MDa researcher associated with the team at Toho University, Japan, and a peer reviewer at the lancetas well as Onyx Adegbola, MD, Ph.D.Physician-Scientist, Lifestyle Medicine Physician and Founder of Casa de Sante, a virtual IBS clinic offering gut-friendly, low-FODMAP products, supplements, and resources for IBS. Maqbool and Adegbola explain that there are two main reasons for the effect of coffee on our bowel movements: one has to do with the way coffee interacts with the muscles in our colon, and the other has to do with how this drink affects ours affects the production of gastric acid.

Coffee can stimulate your colon

The movements and contractions of your colon causes bowel movements. For example acc Mayo Clinic, the walls of your colon separate and stretch, which not only physically pushes stool further down toward your rectum, but also signals your body to poop. One of the main reasons coffee makes you feel like it’s time to go to the bathroom is the way it interacts with this process in your colon.

“Drinking coffee can stimulate the muscles in your colon, which can make you feel like you need to go to the bathroom,” says Maqbool. “It’s the coffee contains caffeineit’s a compound and a natural stimulant that causes the colon muscles to move, leading to a bowel movement.” In other words, coffee loosens things up, making it easier for you to go to the bathroom.

Interestingly, even decaffeinated coffee that still contains a small amount of caffeine can stimulate the colon. According to a study published in European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, caffeinated coffee, decaffeinated coffee, and foods were more effective than water at causing colon contractions. Although decaffeinated coffee caused some colon movement, caffeinated coffee was still 23% more effective.

Another common way coffee can make us poop is due to the interaction with our stomach acid.

“Coffee acts as a natural laxative because it stimulates the production of coffee stomach acid in our stomach and intestines,” says Adegbola.

“This increased acidity helps speed up the digestive process, which can lead to an urge to poop.” This interaction can also “lead to stomach upset or cramps in some people,” Maqbool adds.

Some research suggests that your body’s induced production of stomach acid may actually be determined by the acidity of the particular type of coffee you drink. Common types of acids in coffee are N-alkanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamide, Trigonelline and N-methylpyridinium, and certain coffees contain varying amounts of these acids. In a study published in Molecular Nutrition Researchfound that a dark roast coffee containing lower levels of three common caffeic acids caused less gastric acid production than another market blend.

If you feel like coffee is making you go to the bathroom too often, or sometimes experience acid reflux symptoms after drinking your cup of joe, the Cleveland Clinic suggests a few types of low-acid coffee options: dark roasts, espresso, cold brew, or mushroom blends.

What both doctors want you to know is that the extent of coffee’s effects on your gut at the end of the day really varies from person to person.

“Some people are more sensitive to caffeine than others,” says Adegbola. “Particularly sensitive individuals may experience greater effects from drinking coffee, including an increased urge to go to the bathroom.”

“In any case, it’s always a good idea to stay hydrated and listen to your body,” adds Maqbool. “If after drinking coffee you feel the need to go to the bathroom, that’s fine.”
