Why isn’t there a red carpet at the 2023 Oscars?

For the first time since the ceremony began, the 2023 Oscars will not feature a red carpet, with the Academy opting for a champagne colorway instead.
Organizers said the color was chosen to “evoke the sunset,” and the decision was approved by Academy boss Bill Kramer.
The decision came from creative consultants Lisa Love, a longtime Vogue contributor, and Raul Avila, the creative director of the Met Gala in New York.
“We turned a day event into a night. It’s evening, although it’s still 3 p.m.,” Love told the Associated Press.
“We chose this beautiful sienna-saffron color that’s reminiscent of sunset because that’s the sunset before the golden hour.”
According to the Academy, the first red carpet was introduced in 1961, prompted by the decision to move the world-famous awards show from Hollywood’s Pantages Theater to the Santa Monica Civic Center.
The new venue had a large concrete run between the exit and the entrance, which led to the laying of a carpet.
Other carpets have since featured various shades of red, although this year’s is the first not to be red at all.
The show’s host Jimmy Kimmel previously joked that opting for a champagne “shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilled,” referring to Will Smith’s infamous slap in the face at last year’s ceremony.
“People were like, ‘Is there trouble this year? Will there be violence this year?’ and we certainly hope not,” he said at the official rollout of the carpet.
“I think the decision to have a champagne carpet over a red carpet shows how confident we are that no blood will be spilled.”
Meanwhile, Angela Bassett, a Best Supporting Actress nominee for her performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, told reporters about the change.
“The carpet is different,” Bassett, who wore a light purple dress, told US outlet Variety.
“It does not bother me.
“It goes well with what I’m wearing.”
