It’s arguably the most contentious aspect of the last fifteen months, and the face-covering row will get nowhere on July 19, when almost all legal restrictions on social contact are lifted. The division may be tiring, but the debate counts. “It’s not nothing,” says Telegraph columnist Allison Pearson on this week’s Planet Normal podcast, which you can listen to with the audio player above. “It’s changing the character and feel of society, and I really feel like returning to normal is being portrayed as the reckless thing. On the contrary, I think being overly cautious quickly becomes reckless.”
For Pearson, the debate is both cultural and scientific: “I think we’re going to see the Labor strongholds, the cities masked pretending to be morally superior to the rest of us, and outside the M25 and more ‘normal’ Areas of, say, mask-wearing will fall off completely.”
For Pearson’s podcast co-host Liam Halligan, the fact that the government is still recommending face masks despite there being no legal mandate to wear one as of Monday means a different prediction: “I think the finger-waving classes are going to be den.” facing more free-thinking classes, and I think there will be conflict.” For Halligan, different guidelines for face coverings in the four nations of the UK after July 19 are an “absolute mess”: “I wish there was one or some other way,” he tells the audience.
But will our co-hosts drop their masks for good? Listen to the podcast to find out, and hear Liam Halligan chat with behavioral scientist Professor Paul Dolan on why government must honor its Social Freedom Treaty in a post-vaccine world.
