Aakash Chopra has questioned India’s selectors’ long-term plans after they recalled Ravichandran Ashwin to India’s T20I squad after a long layoff.
The spinner has only played two T20Is for Team India since last year’s T20 World Championship. He has now been called up to the 18-man India squad for the T20I series against West Indies.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra had this to say about the off-spinner’s return to the T20I roster:
“Ravichandran Ashwin is back, that’s interesting. What is the long-term perspective? Why hasn’t he been on the team for the last 8-10 months? Why was he completely sidelined after the World Cup and why did he come back? now?”
The cricketer-turned-analyst asked why the senior pro wasn’t part of the Indian side in any of the T20I series after beating New Zealand last year. He stated:
“Actually he played five games (including three at the World Cup), he did well but after that he didn’t get too many chances. Then you should have played him against Sri Lanka and South Africa too. You didn’t do that. ” Also play him in the T20Is in England, even though he was there in England you could have played him.” [sic]
Chopra also questioned Washington Sundar’s absence as an off-spinner in India’s T20I squad. He mean:
“This is another very big story that Ravichandran Ashwin is there but there is no sign of Washington Sundar. There is no update on Washi Sundar whether he is fit or injured because he was way up front that he is good at bowling than hitting well fielding is ok ok.”[sic]
Sundar was injured while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2022 IPL and has been off Team India’s schedule ever since. He was due to play county cricket for Lancashire but has yet to play a match for them.
“It’s a great opportunity for R Ashwin” – Aakash Chopra on T20I series vs West Indies
Aakash Chopra concluded by noting that the T20Is against the West Indies will present a great opportunity for the off-spinner. He argued:
“It’s a great opportunity for R Ashwin to be fair. jaddu [Jadeja] will play, Axar was also kept in the team with him, Ravi Bishnoi is also in this team. There will be turning pitches, so more spin will be used. You will play it for sure.”
It will be interesting to see how many times the senior pro will play against West Indies during the five-game series. Aside from the aforementioned spinners, Kuldeep Yadav is also part of the squad but his availability will depend on his fitness.
Q. Should R Ashwin be considered for India’s T20 World Cup squad?
