Will there be a sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun?

The highly anticipated film sequel to the award-winning British mystery thriller Luther finally premiered Netflix after a limited theatrical run last month. Idris Elba reprized his role as the famous detective John Luther, who now finds himself in prison as a deranged serial killer (played by Andy Serkis) insists on mocking him. After escaping said prison, Luther embarks on a mission to find and stop his new nemesis by any means necessary.

critical response to Luther’s The first full feature was mixed at best. According to Ready Steady Cut critic MN Miller, Luther: The Fallen Sun “can be an engrossing and genuinely scary crime thriller at times. At other times, the film can be swamped by exploring transgressive themes that many are ashamed of.”

Despite the film’s lukewarm reception, Luther is a popular character, and Idris Elba’s performance was just top notch. And the thriller’s ending leaves the door open to launching an entire movie franchise.

Elba already made his hopes for future films clear, “We have an ambition to make it a franchise because now that you have a film landscape, you have bigger budgets, but you also just have more stories for us to tell.” he said radio times. What are the chances of a sequel and when can we expect it to be released?

A sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun still to be confirmed by Netflix. The first film began filming in November 2021 and premiered on Netflix in March 2023. Should Netflix give the project the green light and start work on the sequel this year, our earliest guess is likely a 2025 release date.

While Idris Elba has said in interviews that he’d like to see someone else wear the iconic leather jacket at some point in the future, we can’t imagine a sequel to that Luther: The Fallen Sun without him. We could also see Cynthia Erivo reprising her role as DCI Odette Raine and Dermot Crowley as Martin Schenk. We didn’t see Ruth Wilson as Luther’s dangerous friend Alice in the first film, but the character’s return in a possible sequel isn’t out of the question.

Luther: The Fallen Sun with the protagonist being approached by MI5 agents with a likely job offer. At this point in the story, he has the choice of either going to work for the government or going back to prison. Could Luther finally ditch his DCI role and take a spy job similar to 007? Maybe the government needs him to track down and bring to justice the one woman he always lets go – Alice Morgan.
