Winterlike Cold to Blast United States in Days; South Prepares for Record-Breaking Lows

A massive cold spell will hit the eastern United States in the coming days, with freezing temperatures forecast in the south and hints of snow in the Northeast and Midwest.

The extent of the cold forecast is estimated by Fox Weather at 180 million people who will see temperatures at least 10 degrees below average on Tuesday and Wednesday.

From Monday the temperatures will drop, then the hammer will fall.

“Through Tuesday and Wednesday there will be intensifying cold spells that will bring temperatures 15 to 20 degrees below average,” forecaster Amy Freeze said.

“The eastern half of the country is certainly gearing up for layered wardrobes. Temperatures could actually drop into the 30s, as far away as Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia,” she said.

Previews of the coming days appeared last week in places like Madison, Wisconsin, where snow fell Thursday, the first time snow fell there on Oct. 13 since records began, according to AccuWeather.

The coming week could bring more than a foot of snow to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and winds that could exceed 50 mph in various places.

“Next week is going to feel more like November for a lot of people,” said Tyler Roys, chief weather forecaster at AccuWeather.

AccuWeather predicts that some locations will experience temperatures as high as 20 degrees below normal.

“Nor will this be a fast-acting rush of cool air as the storm system responsible for the cold will slowly sweep through the entire Northeast between Monday and Thursday,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham.

“A major snow event is by no means expected throughout the inner Northeast, but this will serve as a reminder that winter is not too far away,” he continued.

“The best chances for accumulations between a dust and maybe an inch or two are in the typical lake-effect snow belts of northwestern Pennsylvania and western and northern New York.”

Some predictions say parts of Florida could have temperatures in the upper 30s, according to The Washington Post.

The Post forecast says killer freezes could reach as far as Georgia and Alabama, and temperatures in the upper 30s could stretch as far as the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the Post, low temperatures are expected to hit the 20s and 30s in areas of the Midwest, Northeast and mid-Atlantic on Wednesday, ending the growing season of freezing and frigid weather.
