Wizard101 concedes that the hijacking of the alert system last week was an external hack

We reported the bizarre news about a misinformation about this computer program created by Wizard101 using the malicious texts and vulgar messages attacking the developer KingsIsle. This prompted the company to remove the game server’s offline store for a bug fix and investigation. We thought we’d never find out if it was an internal or external hacker, but now KingsIsle has addressed this issue and clarified that it really is an external exploit, although the company says no other systems were breached .

The company wrote that last Friday, Wizard101’s broadcast system was illegally accessed to post inappropriate in-game messages as if they were written by a KingsIsle employee.

We sincerely apologize for the unreliable comments that are getting into the game and disrupting your gameplay. We really value the idea that Wizard101 is a family-friendly game, and feel stoic if anyone finds a way to disrupt that experience. The incident quickly became apparent and was immediately stopped. We’ve turned off the broadcasting system and added extra security measures to make this possible. We currently believe that an outside party initiated the news through a non-traditional approach of accessing the broadcast system. A second system did not exist.

The studio says it will compensate all players with fewer than seven days from now through the end of the month.
