We are often pushed into situations we least expect. At times like this, prayer goes a long way to restoring our faith and giving us the strength to face what lies ahead. Again and again we hear stories from people’s lives about the magic of prayer, the many miracles that follow fervent prayer. Here is one such incident that restores our faith in the power of humble prayer.
Different people pray for different things. There are prayers asking for the fulfillment of one’s desires. There are thanksgiving. Then there are unconditional prayers made selflessly for others in one’s life. Praying for others is a great virtue. Praying for people you don’t even know is an even greater act.
What’s the first thought that comes to your mind when you hear a siren? Someone is probably in trouble. The human tendency is to empathize with that unknown face and wish nothing big happens. Such a noble thought and such a humble gesture that changed the life of the woman in this story.
Karlina Fulk was having one of her normal evenings. She suddenly heard sirens in her area. As always, she wanted to know what the problem was and to pray for the person in need. She rushed to see if she could find any information on the Neighborhood Watch Page. Your doubts were correct. She found a report of a serious accident that had recently occurred less than 5 miles from her home. She could tell from the report that it was pretty bad and the driver had to be pulled from the scene immediately. It was also mentioned that a rescue helicopter was on the way. This showed her clearly that the situation was serious. She sat and prayed for the injured stranger and for the family members. Little did she know that she was praying for her own family.
She received a call after midnight. It was her parents on the phone. They broke the shocking news that her younger brother had been in an accident. The truth hit her hard. The victim she had prayed so fervently for was her own brother, Rafael. Without delay, she went to the emergency room, where Rafael was being treated.
Speaking about how she felt upon hearing the news, Karlina said: “Nothing will prepare you for the crippling fear that consumes you when someone you love has been seriously hurt. The kind of fear that literally brings you to your knees.”
The situation was critical and there was very little the doctors could do to help Rafael. He was in a coma. The following days were the hardest for the family. Things didn’t get any better with Rafael. His body didn’t seem to be responding to the treatment. The doctors, on the verge of losing hope, told the family that the only chance left was for him to come out of his coma.
It was a true miracle when Rafael finally regained consciousness after a week. But there was some bad news awaiting the family. The doctors informed them that he had lost his memory. When Rafael’s concerned mother asked doctors if her son could go back to college, the doctors gave her the message: “He doesn’t know his name. He can’t even tell the time. He’s never going to college again.” It was a huge blow to the family.
The family’s prayers began to have an effect. Rafael was kept in intensive care for eight days, seven days in trauma, and then 21 long days in an acute brain injury ward. That wasn’t all – he then had to remain inpatient at a rehabilitation center for 6 weeks. He was monitored as an outpatient at the rehabilitation center for 7 months. These were dark and hard days. But they were totally worth the pain the family had endured. Miracles continued to happen in her life. He recovered at a rate doctors never thought possible.
The story doesn’t end here. It has a happy ending – a very happy ending. Rafael went back to college after making a full recovery. He also received his BA in Communications from California State University, Chico. After two and a half years, the family finally got what they had always dreamed of. Karlina took to Facebook to share her pride and ecstasy as her brother dispelled all doubts and graduated. Expressing her delight, she said, “From near loss to preparing for the worst to him completing this miracle, we’ve seen him come back to us.” She went on to talk about who her brother really is was as a person and how much they loved and missed him when they almost lost him in the accident.
She went on to explain how her family suffered as he struggled: “He has come back to us. Because every night we sat by his bedside in the hospital, every long drive to rehab and back, every doctor’s visit, every appeal letter, every time we fell to our knees sobbing… was worth every ounce of pain we were given. A second chance, an opportunity to witness a miracle, but most importantly, we got Rafael back.” Rafael is now committed to taking every step to ensure he enjoys every moment of his life. There was a time when family doctors had told the family that Rafael would not weather the storm. Rafael commented: “I am the storm”. Rafael’s determination and the family’s love for him are sources of inspiration.
