Worst TV remakes of all time
However, with these small screen masterpieces comes the dreaded announcement of a remake or reboot. But why has the practice of rebooting shows become so popular? And why do people remake TV shows when they’re despised by hardcore fans who want their beloved shows to remain untouched?
In this guide, we talk about the worst TV remakes of all time and what makes them so bad. Is it the acting, the direction, or their inability to keep up with their predecessors? Find out here!
Why is TV show remake so popular?
Recently, there has been a surge in remakes of old TV shows. The cult following that the original shows have is something that most production companies big and small would be keen to emulate.
Arguably their hope in remaking popular shows is to leave the same lasting excitement and impression on newer generations. These newer generations may have missed the hype surrounding the original, older shows.
TV remakes can allow present and future generations to enjoy a show that is better suited to the times. There’s also the process of production companies adapting shows for their own audiences.
Why do remakes often fail?
Sometimes it’s the uniqueness and timing of certain shows that make them so popular. These shows may feature a particular style of humor, an original premise, or specific characters that audiences can identify with. Remakes of these series are usually doomed to fail. This is arguably because audiences couldn’t understand what made the original show so popular elsewhere.
Injecting unique elements of the original into the remake may not always work. The concept that made the original so popular may not make the same impression the second time around.
Worst TV Show Remakes Ever
The people in between (2012)
We’re sure every British teenager watched this show in its prime. The Inbetweeners follows the lives of four teenagers as they try to navigate their chaotic school and personal lives. They do this in an awkward and understandable way that can lead many teenagers to identify with their problems.
The original is considered one of the most popular British comedy sitcoms. However, the American remake of the series didn’t leave the same lasting impression. The film followed the same premise as the British original but was intended for an American audience and its failure seemed almost inevitable. Perhaps this is due to the differences in humor and experiences between Brits and Americans.
Stream the year 2008 The people in between Now on 40D or Sky TV. The American version can be found Here.
gossip Girl (2021)
Considered a below-average remake of the hit series from 2007 gossip Girl, the 2021 version was canceled prematurely. The cancellation comes after only two seasons, four fewer than the counterpart.
However, the reason this remake failed may be because it failed to live up to its predecessor. The characters in this version appear as inferior versions of the seemingly untouchable originals. The dialogue and plot were also criticized for lacking substance.
Stream both Original And reissue on Sky TV.
This is another example of an American remake of a British classic that didn’t catch on. It’s no wonder this remake, which follows the exact same premise as the original, didn’t succeed. The series was eventually canceled after one season.
We’ve already talked about the difference in humor and culture between Britain and America. It involved an inherently British culture and slang that may not have resonated as well with American audiences.
Check out the original Netflix now, and find the American version on Amazon.
Charlie’s Angel (2011)
After three film remakes and one TV remake, Charlie’s Angels is clearly a popular concept for filmmakers today. The story, which was first created in 1976, is about three great female leads. However, the 2011 edition, which followed a similar premise, was one of its worst contenders. The series had to be canceled after seven episodes (and an unaired eighth episode).
The original was re-released again in film format in 2019. But this version didn’t get the same acclaim as the original. Not even Kristen Stewart could salvage this film remake failure as it became a box office bomb.
There hasn’t been a remake of Charlie’s Angels since then. Perhaps film and television writers took the hint that some things just deserve to be left alone.
The original show from 1976 is available for purchase Amazon Prime. You can stream this 2000 And 2004 film remakes on Sky TV or NOW TV.

grace point (2014)
The third part of the saga about American remakes of British series comes in the form of grace point. The irony is that this show fell out of favor shortly after it was released. Gracepoint is a remake of the hit British crime drama Broadchurch.
This show made several desperate attempts to live up to its British rival. They even managed to convince original Broadchurch actor David Tennant to star in this version (how, we’re not quite sure). In the end not even David could have saved this show from cancellation as it ended after one season.
You can stream Broadchurch on BritBox, and find Gracepoint on Sky TV. However, we would personally recommend sticking with the original.
We’ve listed some of the worst TV remakes. Now let’s take a look at some examples of the best remakes and where to see them.
American remakes of classic British series may Be good, and this is the perfect example of that. Running for eleven seasons, the US version of “Shameless” is a triumph for the small screen. Even without James McAvoy, this show managed to hold its own and make a name for itself.
The office (2005)
Interestingly, this series outperforms its UK counterpart in seasons despite being a reboot. Steve Carrell stars in the US version of the British mockumentary sitcom of the same name.
Doctor Who (2005)
As one of the most popular sci-fi series of all time, the 2005 reboot is considered far more popular than the 1963-1989 series. After 18 years, no end is expected any time soon, with a new series planned for 2024.
