A witness at the scene told The Press that emergency services were called to the Ouse Bridge to assist a person in distress.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed this and said they were called into action by North Yorkshire Police after a woman sat on the parapet of the Ouse Bridge on the wrong side of the railing.
A spokesman for the service said firefighters from York, Acomb, Ripon, Malton and Selby were also present in addition to the fireboat, which worked with the York Rescue Boat to rescue the woman from the water.
The spokesman said the woman was left in the care of police and ambulance.
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Station chief Tony Walker confirmed the incident was “brought to a successful conclusion”.
“Thank you for your patience and understanding,” he said.
“Excellent team effort of your 999 services.”
