The debate between LeBron James and Michael Jordan will likely continue until the end of time. Despite everything James has done in his historic twenty-year career, many still believe he can never surpass the Chicago Bulls legend.
Part of what will always give Michael Jordan a small advantage is that he came first. He was the first true megastar in pro sports and paved the way for guys like LeBron James to rise to a similar level.
Recently FS1’s Colin Cowherd put a different angle on this debate. Looking back on it now, he feels like Michael Jordan would have a harder time now than it was in the ’90s.
“The story would be much more favorable to LeBron. Not that he would be criticized, but he would be criticized far less if he played, if Jordan did it and Jordan is playing now, Jordan would be beaten up… Michael is, he was kind of lucky. You could have a lot of mistakes in the 90’s . Am I wrong there?”
Some of the things that Colin Cowherd mentioned about Michael Jordan were his scuffles with teammates and his multiple resignations.
Is Colin Cowherd Right About Michael Jordan And LeBron James?
Given his spectacular talent, it’s hard to say Michael Jordan wouldn’t still be amazing today. However, he could certainly be seen in a different light.
With the internet and social media, elite athletes are under the scrutiny more than ever. Almost everything they do and say is out there for the world to see. When Jordan played, the stars still had some separation from the fans.
One reason why it can be argued that Jordan would now be viewed differently is because of the documentary The Last Dance. While most were impressed by Jordan’s size, people got a sense of how tough he was to be in certain spots. If some of the things that happened then were happening now, fans might not see him in a similar light.
Retiring multiple times might also have been a bigger story now than it was in the ’90s. Especially the first instance when Jordan was at the peak of his powers and freshly led the Bulls to three straight championships.
Jordan and LeBron James are two of the greatest basketball players the game has ever seen, and they took very different paths off the court. The Bulls star might not have been told like Cowherd today, but things would certainly have turned out differently.
