Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra is stunned by some decisions by Johannesburg Super Kings (JSK) captain Faf du Plessis. The skipper has not hesitated to bat first in both games where conditions favored the team’s pursuit.
JSK managed to score 190 points despite losing four wickets on the power play in the first game. In the second game, however, there was no such bailout from the lower middle class as they were knocked out by just 81 points against the Paarl Royals.
In a video on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra explained why Faf du Plessis harms his team by not considering the conditions of the draw. He said:
“So far, you might be able to question Faf du Plessis’ captaincy and why he’s doing certain things. Because he wins the toss and bats first regardless of the history of the floor. In both games they lost four wickets on the power play and although they scored 190 points in the first game they will mostly falter like they did against the Paarl Royals.”
Aakash Chopra on JSK’s lack of spinners
The match between JSK and MI Cape Town is scheduled to be played on a used pitch in Cape Town. Although Aakash Chopra thinks Du Plessis might be right to hit first this time, JSK doesn’t have enough good spinners.
Previous pitches in SA20 have supported spin, and Chopra thinks the lack of quality spin options could hurt Super Kings in the future. He stated:
“Beating first this time might not be such a bad move as you’re playing two games in two days on a used pitch so the spinners might get more help. However, JSK doesn’t have enough spinners apart from Phangiso. Even the openers didn’t do much and Donovan Ferreira won’t save you in every game.”
After a disappointing performance with the racquet against the Royals, JSK will be hoping to bounce back against MI Cape Town on Saturday.
