Netflix’s upcoming Indian musical drama The Archis by director Zoya Akhtar has finalized his cast. Playing characters from the iconic Archie Comics franchise, the cast includes emerging talent like Mihir Ahuja (Bard of blood), Khushi Kapoor (The Garwal guns) and Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter Suhana Khan in a supporting role.
Set in the 1960s, the film will also star Dot, Yuvraj Menda, Agastya Nanda and Vedang Raina. The cast is officially revealed in a new video that offers a glimpse into the world that Akhtar promises to bring to life for viewers around the world. You can see it here:
Netflix is pitching the film, which comes from Akhtar’s Tiger Baby Films, as a “musical experience steeped in youth, rebellion, friendships, first love and all young adulthood, yet promising to have something for every generation.”
It is scheduled to appear on the streamer in 2023.
Director Akhtar is known for the lively 2020 musical romance themed hip cop culture in Mumbai manhole boy.
For Netflix India, The Archis will enter an increasingly competitive Indian streaming space. In recent weeks, ZEE5 and Amazon Prime Video have unveiled major film and TV series starring key talent from the multilingual country – Reema Kagti, co-founder of Akhtar and Tiger Baby, is collaborating with Excel Media to produce a serial killer drama Dahaar for Amazon for example.
But the appeal of Indian content is clearly growing globally, and Netflix briefed journalists last week Gangubai Kathiawadi was the first non-English language film from the APAC region to top the box office in 2022 and the first since the Thai flick The whole truth in 2021. Gangubai Kathiawadi was viewed for a total of 13.81 million hours in the week following its release.
